Overview
Sadaharu is a character from the anime and manga series Gintama. He is a giant celestial beast known as a Komagami who serves as the mascot and official pet of the Yorozuya. Originally left inside a cardboard box outside the Yorozuya building, he was adopted by Kagura and became an integral member of the household. Despite his endearing appearance, he possesses an intimidating physical presence and a signature habit of aggressively biting people's heads. Beneath his violent outbursts lies a deeply loyal companion who consistently protects his friends in times of danger.
Appearance
Sadaharu is a massive cosmic biological entity known as a Komagami, bearing the appearance of an extraordinarily large white dog. He possesses a sitting height of 170 centimeters and weighs 300 kilograms. Visually, he is characterized by his full white fur coat, dark black eyes, canine ears, and sharp fangs.
Personality
Despite his adorable appearance, Sadaharu harbors aggressive instincts and has a recurring habit of biting human heads, particularly targeting Sakata Gintoki and Shimura Shinpachi. He exhibits remarkable intelligence, demonstrated by his surprisingly sharp-tongued responses when translated through speech devices. He possesses a massive appetite, consuming multiple bags of food per meal. Beneath his rough demeanor, Sadaharu is deeply devoted to the Yorozuya members, consistently displaying profound loyalty and a willingness to protect his family during critical situations.
Abilities
As a Komagami, Sadaharu naturally possesses the power to guard and suppress the Earth's Dragon Veins. Consuming a combination of goat blood and red berries—or simply strawberry milk—awakens his inner power, transforming him into a giant, ferocious beast. His immense physical strength allows him to serve as a reliable mount for Kagura and Sakata Gintoki. He can fully comprehend human speech and demonstrates advanced learning capability. During catastrophic events, he can channel his life force to calm out-of-control Altana energy, sealing himself into an Altana crystal. Additionally, his stomach possesses unusual digestive qualities capable of altering swallowed targets.
Background
Sadaharu was originally named Kamiko and lived at a shrine guarding a Dragon Vein under the care of the twin priestesses Ane and Mone. Due to financial strain caused by his massive appetite, he was left in a box outside the Yorozuya building, where Kagura discovered him and bestowed the name Sadaharu. During Sakata Kintoki's mind-control scheme, Sadaharu was one of the very few individuals, along with Tama, who retained memories of Sakata Gintoki. In the final arc, he sacrificed his physical form to calm the raging Dragon Vein, entering a dormant state sealed inside an Altana crystal. Eventually, he miraculously broke free from his seal to rejoin Kagura, Sakata Gintoki, and Shimura Shinpachi in their final battle.
Relationships
Sadaharu shares an extraordinarily tight bond with Kagura, who adopted him and frequently relies on him as both a beloved pet and a mount. He maintains a turbulent yet trusting relationship with Sakata Gintoki, constantly biting his head while remaining fiercely loyal to him. Shimura Shinpachi is similarly subjected to his head-biting habit. He remains connected to his former owners, the twin priestesses Ane and Mone, who assist him during the Dragon Vein ritual. Komako is his canine sibling, while Elizabeth stands as his primary rival among the series' mascot characters.
Trivia
Sadaharu's name is believed to be derived from the legendary Japanese baseball player Sadaharu Oh. During his debut appearance, Sakata Gintoki humorously misidentified him with other famous baseball figures like Shigeo and Tatsunori. As part of a real-world promotional collaboration with Saga Prefecture, he served as an official mascot under the modified name Sagaharu, complete with a life-sized statue created for the campaign. He also appeared in crossover content for the mobile game Granblue Fantasy.
