Overview
Hestu is a character appearing in The Legend of Zelda series, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. A musician of the Korok tribe, he is a nature spirit who loves to dance. Ordinary Hylians are generally unable to see him. In gameplay, he plays a vital supporting role by expanding Link's inventory capacity.
Appearance
Hestu is a large, chubby wooden spirit, standing noticeably larger than other Korok children. His face is covered by a leafy mask. He carries a pair of small twig-handled maracas, which he uses to play music and perform his dances.
Personality
Hestu possesses a cheerful, easygoing, and transparent personality. He speaks with endearing speech mannerisms, referring to himself as "Bokuchin" and addressing Link as "Kimichin." He frequently utters playful sounds such as "Kyun" or "Kyurun" and exhibits an enthusiastic love for dancing whenever he shakes his musical instruments.
Abilities
By performing a high-energy rhythm dance with his maracas, Hestu has the mystical power to expand Link's pouch storage capacity for swords, bows, and shields. This ability relies on having Korok Seeds placed inside his maracas. In Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, he acts as a combatant who attacks with his maracas and summons swarms of smaller Koroks to fight alongside him.
Background
Hestu encounters Link after monsters steal his cherished maracas—which he has used since he was two years old—and the mischievous Korok children scatter the Korok Seeds hidden inside them. Once Link retrieves the instruments, Hestu agrees to expand Link's inventory slots whenever provided with the lost seeds scattered across the world. In Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, he guides Link's group when monsters block the path to the Korok Forest.
Relationships
Hestu maintains a friendly relationship with Link, assisting him throughout his journey by upgrading his inventory carrying limits. He also interacts with the younger children of the Korok tribe, who frequently take and hide the valuable seeds from his maracas.
Trivia
Because the required count of Korok Seeds escalates dramatically with each inventory upgrade, fans playfully nickname him "Bottakurin" (a pun on scamming). Players who collect all 900 Korok Seeds hidden throughout the world receive a special completion reward and gain the ability to request his dance performance at any time.
