Overview
Yunobo is a prominent Goron character appearing in Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series, including Breath of the Wild, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, and Tears of the Kingdom. As a descendant of the ancient Goron Champion Daruk, he possesses immense physical durability and unique ancestral powers. Though initially timid, Yunobo evolves through his travels alongside Link into the ambitious president of the mining company YunoboCo and eventually awakens as the Sage of Fire. He serves as both a loyal companion and a vital defender who works tirelessly for the prosperity of his home region.
Appearance
Yunobo is a young Goron with white hair, a cheerful round face, and a sturdy, muscular build characteristic of his species. He sports a light blue scarf around his neck, reminiscent of an ancient Champion. In later years, he grows a small beard on his chin. While under the influence of a hypnotic mask, he briefly wore a wrestler-style headpiece, a flashy gold fur-trimmed jacket, gold rings, and armlets, though he reverted to his signature appearance once freed.
Personality
Initially depicted as timid and easily intimidated, Yunobo originally spoke with a childlike verbal rhythm. Through his shared combat experiences with Link, he develops strong courage and transitions to a more mature speaking habit. At heart, he possesses a firm sense of responsibility, deep resilience, and genuine care for the elders and citizens of Goron City. Although he briefly succumbed to self-indulgence and aggressive greed while controlled by an enchanted mask, he feels immense remorse upon coming to his senses and dedicates himself wholeheartedly to leading and uplifting his community.
Abilities
Yunobo inherits Daruk's Protection, an ability that forms a red defensive aura around his body, allowing him to act as a living cannonball to strike massive targets. In close-quarters combat, he can consume Rock Roast to trigger various elemental protective shields that boost his attack range and break enemy defenses. As the Sage of Fire, he can launch himself forward in a high-speed, flame-engulfed spinning charge on command. This charge easily pulverizes solid rock barriers and heavily armored enemy defenses, while he supports allies using the heavy Boulder Breaker.
Background
Growing up in Goron City as the descendant of Daruk, Yunobo assisted Link in reclaiming the Divine Beast Vah Rudania atop Death Mountain. In an alternate timeline, he was brought through time to save his ancestor from Fireblight Ganon. Following the cooling of Death Mountain's lava, Yunobo established the mining company YunoboCo to foster Goron industry. While investigating volcanic gloom, he was deceived by an entity resembling Princess Zelda into wearing a corrupting mask, causing a crisis with Marbled Rock Roast. After Link shattered the artifact, Yunobo ventured into the Depths, defeated Marbled Gohma, received a Secret Stone, and successfully awakened as the Sage of Fire.
Relationships
Yunobo shares a bond of deep trust with Link, having fought alongside him across several major trials before establishing a sacred vow as a Sage. He holds his ancestor, the Goron Champion Daruk, in high esteem, carrying on his legacy and unique protective powers. After being tricked by an entity masquerading as Princess Zelda, Yunobo commits himself to helping Link locate the true princess. He also maintains an unwavering devotion to the Goron elders and community, striving to protect and enrich their livelihoods.
Trivia
Yunobo's official given name is simply "Yun," with the suffix "-bo" attached as a nickname used by everyone around him. His name derives from "Yumbo," a Japanese term for heavy hydraulic excavators. Fans lightheartedly speculate whether he will be renamed "Yunker" in adulthood, drawing parallels to his ancestor Daruk, who was called "Dar-bo" during his youth. Additionally, Yunobo gained comedic sympathy among fans when he was uniquely omitted from pre-release trailers for Tears of the Kingdom as well as a real-world Japanese beverage promotional campaign featuring the game's key allies.
