Overview

Malon is a recurring character in Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series, debuting in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and subsequently appearing in titles such as Oracle of Seasons and The Minish Cap. She is typically featured as the daughter of the owner of Lon Lon Ranch, taking on the role of a friendly ranch maiden who interacts with Link throughout his journeys.

Appearance

Malon has pointed ears, long orange-brown hair, and blue eyes. Her costume includes a white short-sleeved shirt, a neckerchief with a decorative brooch or ribbon, and an apron. She is also depicted with footwear, sun hats or straw hats, and alternative attire such as swimwear.

Personality

Malon is cheerful, responsible, and hard-working, often taking care of ranch duties to support her lazy father, Talon. She loves singing and has a deep affection for animals, particularly the horse Epona. Despite her practical nature, she harbors romantic dreams of a prince coming to sweep her away. Even when faced with adversity, she remains gentle, forgiving, and surprisingly resilient.

Abilities

Malon possesses a gifted singing voice, frequently performing Epona's Song, a melody taught to her by her late mother. She is also a skilled horseback rider, capable of setting high records in obstacle courses, and displays adept abilities in livestock management and general ranch work.

Background

In Ocarina of Time, Malon first encounters Link in Hyrule Castle Town, affectionately referring to him as Fairy Boy. She lives at Lon Lon Ranch with her father, Talon, caring for the young horse Epona. When the ranch is taken over by Ingo in the adult timeline, she patiently endures the hardship until normal operations are restored. In other installments, such as Oracle of Seasons and The Minish Cap, she raises Cuccos or travels to town to sell Lon Lon Milk.

Relationships

Malon is the daughter of Talon, whom she constantly assists and looks after. She bonds with Link during his journey, teaching him Epona's Song. Regarding Ingo, who temporarily takes control of the ranch, she shows sympathy rather than resentment after the incident is resolved. She also shares a strong bond of affection with the horse Epona.

Trivia

Malon's character design was inspired by Marin from The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Her child and adult character models were reused in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for the sisters Romani and Cremia. Additionally, the melody she sings, Epona's Song, continues to be referenced as a recurring motif for horses across later entries in the franchise.
