Overview
Akira Mado is a prominent female Ghoul Investigator from the Tokyo Ghoul series who serves within the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG). Having graduated at the top of her class from the Ghoul Investigator Training Academy, she approaches her duty with sharp intelligence and strict dedication to efficiency. She is initially assigned as the partner of Koutarou Amon, the former subordinate of her late father, Kureo Mado. In Tokyo Ghoul:re, she advances to the ranks of First Class and Associate Special Investigator, acting as a mentor to Haise Sasaki and overseeing younger members of the agency.
Appearance
Akira features short blonde hair, which she later restyles into a neatly arranged braided updo in Tokyo Ghoul:re. She has green eyes and a sharp, piercing gaze that strongly resembles her late father, Kureo Mado. Her recorded height is 164 cm and her weight is 49 kg.
Personality
Akira is highly analytical, calm, and devoted to practical efficiency. Viewing formal politeness as a waste of time, she dispenses with honorific language even when addressing her superiors, speaking in a concise and direct manner. Though she comes across as cold and detached, she possesses deep emotional warmth and cares deeply for her allies. She is an avid animal lover who owns a pet cat named Maris Stella. To maintain her figure, she strictly refrains from eating after 9:00 PM. She is extremely fond of spicy dishes, yet possesses a laughably low alcohol tolerance, becoming intoxicated after consuming a single glass.
Abilities
Akira exhibits top-tier intellect, exceptional deductive skills, and high combat proficiency, supported by her background as the Academy's top graduate. She is deeply knowledgeable in quinque design and engineering, actively contributing to their development. In battle, she wields the chimera quinque Amatsu, which combines Bikaku and Koukaku properties to function both as a flexible whip and a sharp blade. She also commands her father's inherited Rinkaku quinque, Fueguchi, earning her the reputation among ghouls as the Spine User.
Background
Born to Ghoul Investigators Kureo Mado and Kasuka Mado, Akira lost both of her parents in the line of duty. After graduating at the head of her class, she joined the CCG and was partnered with Koutarou Amon in the 20th Ward. Following the One-Eyed Owl Suppression Operation, she was promoted and assigned by Kishou Arima to supervise Haise Sasaki. During the Rushima Landing Operation, she sustained critical injuries while shielding her former classmate Seidou Takizawa—now a half-ghoul—from an attack. Branded a traitor by the CCG, she was rescued and joined the resistance group Goat, helping bridge the conflict between humans and ghouls.
Relationships
Akira held profound respect for her father, Kureo Mado, carrying on his passion for quinque research. Her dynamic with her former partner, Koutarou Amon, evolved from early professional friction into deep romantic feelings, eventually leading them to live together. She maintained a complex, lasting bond with her Academy classmate Seidou Takizawa, willingly giving up her career to protect him after his transformation. As a mentor to Haise Sasaki, she offered maternal affection and warmth, earning his earnest trust despite the tragic history surrounding his identity.
Trivia
Her pet cat is named Maris Stella. Akira has an exceptionally weak constitution regarding alcohol, becoming completely drunk after only a single drink. She loves intensely spicy food and once forcibly fed a spoon of extremely hot food to Koutarou Amon, who dislikes spicy meals. Due to her proficient handling of the Rinkaku quinque Fueguchi, she earned the moniker Spine User among ghouls.
