Overview
Nimura Furuta is a central figure and primary antagonist in Tokyo Ghoul:re. Originally appearing as a polite, low-ranking Rank 1 Ghoul Investigator for the CCG, his real identity is Souta Washuu-Furuta. Operating in the shadows under various aliases—including the Clown group member Souta and the Ghoul Restaurant guest PG—he orchestrated the steel beam incident that catalyzed the series' events. He later assumes the name Kichimura Washuu to claim leadership over the CCG.
Appearance
Furuta has black hair styled with strands partially veiling one side of his face, which he later slicked back. He possesses dark eyes, a distinct mole underneath his eye, and displays a single red eye as a half-ghoul. He typically wears a sharp dark suit with a collared shirt and gloves. During his covert activities, he dons a mask. In combat, he wields a chainsaw-like quinque, a black katana, and eventually manifests a glowing, single-eyed kakuja form.
Personality
Beneath his polite, subservient, and seemingly harmless exterior lies a deeply ruthless and sadistic personality. Furuta views people as pawns on a board, showing no hesitation in sacrificing allies or engaging in grotesque provocation. Despite his chaotic and theatrical behavior, his actions stem from a fatalistic despair over his shortened lifespan and a repressed desire to lead an ordinary, peaceful life.
Abilities
Born as a half-human from the Sunlit Garden, Furuta possesses elite physical capabilities, which were further augmented after receiving Rize Kamishiro's kakuhou to become a half-ghoul. He exhibits immense combat skill, effortlessly overwhelming powerful opponents in hand-to-hand combat using his bare hands, massive kagune, and quinque weapons like a chainsaw and a black blade. In his final battle, he manifests a full kakuja form.
Background
Born as an illegitimate child of Tsuneyoshi Washuu, Furuta grew up in the Sunlit Garden. Learning of his limited lifespan, he helped his childhood friend Rize Kamishiro escape the family's control. He engineered the steel beam accident to harvest her kakuhou for himself. Serving in the CCG under Kijima and later Haise Sasaki, he operated behind the scenes with V and the Clowns. He assassinated his father, seized control of the CCG as its Director, and orchestrated the Dragon crisis, ultimately dying in battle against Ken Kaneki while reflecting on his true desires.
Relationships
He shares a deep, obsessive connection with Rize Kamishiro, his childhood friend from the Sunlit Garden. Tsuneyoshi Washuu is his father, and Yoshitoki Washuu is his half-brother. In the CCG, he worked under Kijima and later partnered with Haise Sasaki (Ken Kaneki). He collaborated closely with Akihiro Kanou on ghoulification experiments and shared a hostile, taunting relationship with Eto Yoshimura.
Trivia
Throughout the story, Furuta operated under numerous false identities, such as Souta, PG, and Kichimura Washuu. He is notorious for serving Eto a horrific pâté made from her editor. In the live-action movie adaptation's special bonus clip, he was portrayed by Mackenyu.
