Overview
Tooru Mutsuki is a main character in Tokyo Ghoul:re and an initial member of the Quinx Squad, a unit of Ghoul Investigators transplanted with ghoul abilities. Starting as a Rank 3 Investigator, Mutsuki steadily advances through the ranks of the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) to eventually become a Special Class Investigator. Characterized by a slender build, bronze skin, and an eyepatch covering the right eye, Mutsuki addresses self with male pronouns. Having lost family to ghouls at a young age, Mutsuki was taken in by the CCG Academy and holds immense admiration for mentor Haise Sasaki.
Appearance
Tooru Mutsuki has a slender physique with bronze skin, short green hair, and red eyes. Because the right eye maintains a permanently active kakugan, it is constantly hidden behind a white medical eyepatch or a black leather one. Biologically female, Mutsuki hides this identity through male attire and chest binding. Regular outfits include long-sleeved collared shirts and the standard white CCG trench coat.
Personality
Initially, Mutsuki exhibits a gentle, timid, and hesitant demeanor, demonstrating a clear aversion to blood and violence. However, undergoing severe trauma triggers a drastic psychological shift, exposing a repressed sadism and ruthless violence. Mutsuki develops an intense, obsessive devotion toward Haise Sasaki, reacting with violent jealousy and murderous intent toward anyone perceived as a rival for Sasaki's affections. Underlying this unstable behavior is a deep-seated self-loathing stemming from past trauma.
Abilities
As a Quinx, Mutsuki possesses a Bikaku kagune that initially manifested as insect-like appendages, later gaining the ability to split into finer, highly versatile strands. Though early control was hindered by exceptionally low RC levels, Mutsuki eventually mastered RC cell manipulation to the degree of perfectly copying the shapes of others' kagune. In combat, Mutsuki relies on ambidexterity and advanced knife-handling skills, wielding twin Rinkaku knife quinques named Abksol and Ifraft. Later equipment additions include the Koukaku quinques Black Rinsirgnat and White Rustingnat.
Background
Raised in a tragic home environment, Mutsuki was admitted to the CCG Second Academy following the death of family members, eventually joining the Quinx Squad under Haise Sasaki. After distinguishing self during the Auction Sweep Operation, Mutsuki earned a double promotion to Rank 1 Investigator. During the Rushima Operation, Mutsuki was captured and brutally tortured by the ghoul Torso, but ultimately killed the captor and escaped. This traumatic event shattered Mutsuki's mental stability, leading to an increasingly violent path within the CCG. After being confronted and comforted by former squadmates, Mutsuki regained composure and continued serving as a dedicated investigator.
Relationships
Mutsuki holds profound admiration and an obsessive romantic affection for Haise Sasaki, consistently addressing him as Sensei. Among the Quinx Squad, Mutsuki shares a complex, tight-knit bond with Kuki Urie and Saiko Yonebayashi. Urie, in particular, becomes a vital confidant after discovering Mutsuki's secret biological sex. Conversely, Mutsuki harbors extreme hostility and jealousy toward Touka Kirishima due to her relationship with Sasaki, leading to direct combat engagements between them.
Trivia
Mutsuki's early design, featuring a single eyepatch over the right eye and an innate fear of blood, closely parallels Ken Kaneki's appearance at the beginning of the original series. The preference for male attire and pronouns stems from deep trauma regarding past identity. Within the Quinx Squad, Saiko Yonebayashi affectionately refers to Mutsuki by the nickname Mucchan.
