Overview
Alex Louis Armstrong is a prominent character in Fullmetal Alchemist, serving as an officer in the Amestrian State Military. He holds the rank of Major and the official title of Strong Arm Alchemist as a certified State Alchemist. Hailing from the elite Armstrong noble family, he combines massive physical build and formidable abilities with a gentle and compassionate heart, acting as a steadfast ally to Edward Elric and his companions.
Appearance
Alex Louis Armstrong is a 35-year-old man standing 220 centimeters tall with an extremely muscular, imposing physique. He is bald except for a single lock of curly blond hair hanging over his forehead, complemented by a matching blond mustache with curled tips. His deep-set eyes lack eyebrows, his lower eyelashes are long, and he has a broad, cleft chin. He wears an Amestrian military uniform with blue pants and grips gauntlets inscribed with transmutation circles on both hands. He frequently tears off his shirt to show off his physique, an act visually accompanied by floating pink sparkles.
Personality
Despite his intimidating appearance, Alex Louis Armstrong is exceptionally compassionate, gentle, and prone to tears. Speaking with refined formality, he behaves as a courteous gentleman who shows polite respect to superiors, elders, and even opponents in battle. Although loyal to his nation, his softhearted nature renders him ill-suited for atrocities; during the Ishval Civil War, witnessing the killing of non-combatants broke his resolve and led to his removal from the front lines. While sometimes naive about high-level military corruption, he can be surprisingly clever when protecting others. He is fiercely devoted to Edward and Alphonse Elric, though his crushing bear hugs often cause them physical distress.
Abilities
Alex Louis Armstrong utilizes a powerful combat style centered on sharp punches and nimble footwork from boxing, integrated with kicks and throws. His physical strength is immense, capable of standing ground against the Homunculus Sloth. His alchemy is activated by striking targets with gauntlets inscribed with transmutation circles. He specializes in manipulating stone and minerals, transmuting them into sharp projectiles, sturdy defensive walls, or sculpted statues of himself posing. Furthermore, he commands refined family techniques passed down through generations, including detailed portrait sketching, lip-reading, and undetected tailing.
Background
Born as the primary son of Philip Gargantos Armstrong, head of the prominent Armstrong noble family, Alex earned the qualification of State Alchemist and joined the Amestrian State Military as a Major in Central Command. Due to his emotional breakdown during the Ishval Civil War, he was removed from combat, a circumstance that stalled his military promotion despite his long tenure. Throughout his service under Maes Hughes and as a bodyguard to Führer King Bradley, he acts as a crucial protector and supporter for the Elric brothers as they uncover the truth behind the state.
Relationships
Alex maintains a fearful relationship with his eldest sister, Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong of Northern Command, who took leadership of the family after defeating him in a clash. In contrast, his youngest sister, Cathleen Elle Armstrong, adores him. He serves as a caring guardian to Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric while aligning with Colonel Roy Mustang against military corruption. During his travels, he developed a firm muscle friendship with Sig Curtis, husband of Izumi Curtis, based on mutual admiration of their physical condition. Under his direct command are Second Lieutenant Maria Ross and Sergeant Denny Brosh.
Trivia
His name is derived from the British-designed Armstrong cannon used during late Edo-period Japan and the famous American jazz musician Louis Armstrong. Manga author Hiromu Arakawa has noted that Alex was one of the characters she enjoyed drawing most. His distinctive visual design and theatrical personality served as a foundation for similar characters in Arakawa's later works, such as Sensei Todoroki in Silver Spoon.
