Overview

Tim Marcoh is a supporting character in the manga and anime series Fullmetal Alchemist. A former State Alchemist who bore the moniker Crystal Alchemist in the 2003 animated series, he was a prominent medical researcher and ecological alchemist for Amestris. After serving as the primary developer of the Philosopher's Stone, he abandoned his position out of deep remorse over the human sacrifices required for its creation. He went into hiding under the alias Mauro, working as a quiet country doctor until his encounter with Edward Elric dragged him back into the overarching conflict.

Appearance

Marcoh is an elderly man featuring a receding hairline, a mustache, and round glasses, typically wearing a white physician's coat. To avoid capture by the military and Homunculi, his face was deliberately disfigured and reconstructed using Scar's destructive alchemy alongside May Chang's Rentanjutsu. Additionally, he harbors a specialized destruction transmutation circle hidden on his right palm.

Personality

Marcoh is an earnest, gentle man with an ordinary citizen's mindset, lacking any desire to intimidate or posture. He is weighed down by immense guilt over his role in synthesizing Philosopher's Stones, which fuels his unyielding drive for penance. Though naturally cautious and fearful of violent forces, he harbors quiet courage, willingly risking his life when he commits to standing up against wrongdoing.

Abilities

Marcoh is an expert in medical and biological alchemy with a profound understanding of human physiology and complex alchemical encryptions. As the foremost authority on the Philosopher's Stone, he understands its molecular assembly well enough to employ a unique transmutation circle that disintegrates the stone completely. He possesses top-tier mastery, capable of transmuting even while bound by drawing circles on surrounding surfaces, which made him a designated candidate for a Human Sacrifice.

Background

During the Ishval War of Extermination, Marcoh spearheaded experiments creating Philosopher's Stones from human lives. Unable to bear the atrocity, he disguised his findings as a cookbook in the National Library and fled to live as a rural doctor. After guiding Edward Elric toward his hidden notes, he was captured by the Homunculi. Inside their hideout, he met Scar and staged his own death using a chimera carcass before altering his facial features. Joining Scar's group in the northern region of Briggs, he decoded crucial manuscripts and successfully outsmarted and neutralized Envy by destroying the Homunculus's stone. Following the final battle, Marcoh restored Roy Mustang's sight using a stone on the condition that Mustang aid Ishval's revival.

Relationships

Marcoh provided Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric with the clue to his concealed research, putting the brothers on the path to discovering the truth of their world. Although Marcoh offered his life to Scar out of guilt over Ishval, Scar commanded him to live and make amends, resulting in Marcoh traveling with Scar's group. After the war, Marcoh bargained with Roy Mustang to heal his lost eyesight in exchange for implementing reconstruction policies for the Ishvalan people. When confronted by Envy, Marcoh turned the tables on the Homunculus by invoking his hidden transmutation technique to strip away Envy's power.

Trivia

Marcoh concealed his lethal research under the deceptive title 1000 Recipes of Today within the National Library's First Branch. In the 2003 anime adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist, his storyline ends differently, culminating in his capture by military forces and ultimate consumption by Gluttony. Because of his exceptional skill in alchemy, the Homunculi monitored him closely as a potential candidate for a Human Sacrifice.
