Overview

Isaac McDougal, known as the Freezing Alchemist, is an anime-original character who appears in the 2009 series Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. A former State Alchemist and military major, he turned into an anti-establishment rebel commander after defecting from the Amestrian army. Driven by his discovery of the military leadership's dark conspiracy, he acts as an extremist seeking to freeze Central Command to stop their plans.

Appearance

Isaac McDougal is an imposing figure standing approximately 198 cm tall with long black hair tied back in a ponytail and a noticeable hair strand pointing upward. He wears a specialized gauntlet engraved with a transmutation circle on his right hand, and has an emergency transmutation circle carved directly into the palm of his left hand.

Personality

Originally a principled military officer with a strong sense of conscience, the horrors of war severely compromised his spirit. Though driven by a desperate desire to protect the nation's future, his extreme actions warped his judgment, making him willing to sacrifice innocent civilians to achieve his ends. Despite his ruthless methods as a terrorist, he retains traces of his former noble self, showing genuine concern for young State Alchemists.

Abilities

He specializes in water-based alchemy involving phase transitions, allowing him to freeze liquid, cause steam explosions, or boil opponents' blood. He can manipulate any source of liquid—including his own blood—to construct sharp weapons like ice swords and spears. Alongside his reliance on transmutation circles drawn on his gauntlet and left palm, he possesses exceptional physical prowess and martial skills. Utilizing a hidden Philosopher's Stone within his body, he can perform large-scale transmutations to control water throughout an entire city.

Background

After experiencing the atrocities of the Ishval Civil War, Isaac was overcome with guilt and surrendered his State Alchemist certification, abandoning the military to join the anti-government movement. Having uncovered the central military's secret plot, he infiltrated Central City to freeze the command headquarters using elaborate transmutation networks. His plan was thwarted by Edward Elric, Alphonse Elric, and Roy Mustang, and he was ultimately executed by King Bradley before he could reveal the full truth.

Relationships

He fought directly against Edward Elric, Alphonse Elric, Roy Mustang, and Alex Louis Armstrong during his attack on Central. Driven by deep hatred for the military high command and King Bradley, he was ultimately killed by Bradley to silence him. Unbeknownst to Isaac himself, the Homunculi kept him under surveillance as a potential sacrifice candidate.

Trivia

The name Isaac briefly appears in the original manga's Ishval flashback during a military communication report. Conceptually, the author originally planned for a State Alchemist character who defected after the Ishval war, though those narrative elements were later redistributed among other characters during the manga's serialization.
