Winry Rockbell is the heroine of Fullmetal Alchemist and a childhood friend of Edward and Alphonse Elric. Serving as a crucial emotional anchor and family figure for the Elric brothers, she is responsible for crafting and maintaining Edward's prosthetic automail limbs.

Winry is a fair-skinned young woman with light blonde hair bound in a ponytail and blue eyes. She has six ear piercings in total, with four in her right ear and two in her left. Her attire typically consists of a mechanic's jumpsuit paired with a bandana, or a white sleeveless top worn with a black miniskirt, a black jacket, and leather short boots. She is also seen wearing items such as aprons and cold-weather coats.

Personality

Winry is spirited, quick-tempered, and optimistic, expressing her emotions openly and possessing a deeply empathetic heart. She is a dedicated gearhead who grows intensely enthusiastic when inspecting complex automail components. She has a short temper regarding the mistreatment of her craftsmanship, frequently striking Edward with wrenches when he breaks his prosthetics. Despite her hot-headed moments, she possesses strong moral fortitude and consistently worries for the safety of her friends.

Abilities

She is an exceptionally talented automail engineer capable of custom-designing, fabricating, and repairing complex mechanical prosthetics, including specialized cold-weather models. In addition to her mechanical expertise, she possesses foundational medical knowledge, which she once utilized to successfully deliver a baby during a severe storm.

Background

Orphaned at a young age when her doctor parents died during the Ishvalan War, Winry was raised by her grandmother Pinako in Resembool. After the Elric brothers' failed human transmutation, she and Pinako crafted Edward's automail prosthetics. To refine her skills, she later traveled to the automail hub of Rush Valley to work as an apprentice. Throughout the journey, she endured various hardships—including being used as leverage by military forces—while remaining steadfast until the end of the conflict.

Relationships

She shares a deep bond with Edward Elric, whom she eventually marries after the main conflict, later having a son and a daughter together. She regards Alphonse Elric as close family. Her grandmother, Pinako Rockbell, acts as her guardian and mentor. She admires Riza Hawkeye, who inspired her ear piercings. Though Scar killed her parents, Winry ultimately chooses to treat his injuries rather than succumb to vengeance.

Trivia

The six earrings she wears were gifts brought back by the Elric brothers as peace offerings. The heavy wrench she carries for her work is widely treated as her signature prop and comedic self-defense weapon throughout the story.
