Kamen Rider Chalice

Overview

Kamen Rider Chalice is a primary Rider featured in 'Kamen Rider Blade'. Transformed by Hajime Aikawa, he is themed around a praying mantis and the Heart card suit. Unlike the Rider systems produced by the Board of Archaeological Research Organization, Chalice utilizes a distinct transformation mechanism while fighting alongside and against the other Riders.

Appearance

Chalice wears a black suit with gold accents, silver torso armor, and red heart-shaped compound eyes. Two sharp antennae extend from his helmet, while the back features red wing-like armor. His bodily structure directly resembles the Mantis Undead wearing specialized armor. His physical frame is built from an ancient mineral named Shadow Crystal, black skin containing Shadow Tar, and scale armor along the arms.

Personality

Initially detached, hostile, and deeply distrustful, Chalice views everyone around him as a threat and prefers to fight alone. However, through his quiet cohabitation at Cafe Jacaranda with Amane Kurihara and her family, he gradually develops genuine human warmth. He becomes intensely devoted to protecting Amane, regularly coming to her defense whenever she is endangered.

Abilities

Chalice transforms by swiping the Change Mantis Rouse Card through the Chalice Rouzer belt on his abdomen. His signature weapon, the Chalice Arrow, acts as a long-range bow whose sides can expand into a sword. His body repels heavy gunfire and possesses self-repair capabilities. He features sensory organs capable of tracking targets within 10 kilometers, hearing up to 1,000,000 Hz, and seeing through 10-meter-thick lead barrier. By combining cards, he executes finishers such as the Spinning Dance, a high-altitude tornado-driven kick, and operates the specialized motorcycle Shadow Chaser.

Background

Chalice's true identity is the Joker Undead, a creature participating in the Battle Fight who assumed the human form of Hajime Aikawa. By utilizing the Mantis Undead card, he takes on the form and abilities of Kamen Rider Chalice. His biological capability served as the original prototype for the man-made Rider systems. Beyond 'Kamen Rider Blade', Chalice has made appearances across alternate crossover works including 'Kamen Rider Decade' and 'Kamen Rider Zi-O'.

Relationships

Hajime Aikawa is the civilian disguise adopted by the entity that transforms into Chalice. Although initially locked in violent rivalry with Kazuma Kenzaki (Kamen Rider Blade), the two eventually forge an unbreakable bond of mutual trust. He maintains complex dynamics of friction and alliance with Sakuya Tachibana (Kamen Rider Garren) and Mutsuki Kamijo (Kamen Rider Leangle). Meanwhile, Amane Kurihara and her mother Haruka provide the emotional sanctuary that unlocks his compassion.

Trivia

Chalice is the very first Kamen Rider to feature a praying mantis as his sole motif. Despite incorporating a heart pattern, his design achieved a sleek, formidable aesthetic that gained enduring praise. Plans originally called for Chalice to transform without calling out 'Henshin', but the actor successfully requested its inclusion. He also holds one of the shortest transformation durations among Heisei Kamen Riders.
