He shows immense compassion toward children and innocent people, willing to risk his own life to protect humanity. Through his cyborg modification and the King Stone embedded within him, Koutarou can transform into Kamen Rider BLACK and later evolve into Kamen Rider BLACK RX, gaining access to alternate forms such as Robo Rider and Bio Rider. His modified body grants him superhuman strength, infrared vision, enhanced senses, and rapid healing capabilities. Beyond his transformation powers, he possesses superior athletic abilities, advanced mechanical knowledge, exceptional driving skills, and a license to pilot helicopters.

Background

After losing his parents at age three, Koutarou was raised by Professor Souichirou Akizuki alongside Souichirou's children, Nobuhiko and Kyoko. On his nineteenth birthday, Koutarou and Nobuhiko were abducted by the cult Gorgom due to being born during a solar eclipse. Modified into a Century King, Koutarou escaped before his memories were erased and fought Gorgom as Kamen Rider BLACK. Following Gorgom's downfall, he found refuge with his uncle's family and began working as a helicopter pilot for Sahara Air. However, when the Crisis Empire attacked, solar radiation altered his King Stone, rebirthing him as Kamen Rider BLACK RX to fight anew.

Relationships

Koutarou shares a deeply tragic bond with Nobuhiko Akizuki, his adoptive brother and best friend, who was transformed into his sworn rival Shadow Moon. He was raised by his foster father, Souichirou Akizuki, and received emotional support from Kyoko Akizuki and Katsumi Kida. After his battle with Gorgom, he was taken in by his uncle Shunkichi Sahara and his family, including Utako, Shigeru, and Hitomi, and built a romantic relationship with Reiko Shiratori. He also shares tight bonds of alliance and friendship with companions like Joe of the Haze, Kyoko Matoba, and senior heroes such as Kamen Rider 1.
