Overview
Shadow Moon is a central antagonist appearing in Kamen Rider BLACK and Kamen Rider BLACK RX. Originally Nobuhiko Akizuki, he was subjected to cybernetic surgery by the sinister organization Gorgom to become a Century King candidate alongside his close friend, Kotaro Minami (Kamen Rider BLACK). Encased in striking metallic silver armor, he serves as Kotaro's tragic arch-rival, fighting for the throne of the Creation King. He is widely recognized as one of the most prominent evil Rider figures in the franchise.
Appearance
Shadow Moon's body is covered in a metallic outer shell known as the Silver Guard, giving him a mechanical, armor-clad look. His head features a helmet fitted with antennae, and his prominent compound eyes glow green. At his waist, he wears the Shadow Charger belt, which houses the moon-themed Kingstone as its core energy supply.
Personality
After awakening as a Century King, Shadow Moon exhibits a cold and unyielding demeanor, suppressing his human self in relentless pursuit of his battle against Kotaro Minami. However, subtle traces of his former humanity endure, reflected in moments where he displays concern for his sister and past lover. In subsequent encounters, even after losing his memories, he operates under a fierce warrior's pride—refusing to be used as a pawn by treacherous allies and showing a surprisingly honorable streak in his final moments.
Abilities
Powered by the internal Kingstone, Shadow Moon possesses exceptional combat capabilities. His physical arsenal includes the Shadow Punch and a double-leg Shadow Kick. He can discharge green energy from his hands via the Shadow Beam to bind or blast targets, while the Shadow Flash allows him to manipulate weather and summon phantom phantasms. He commands the Crimson Satan Saber, firing energy projectiles from its tip, and can independently forge dual Shadow Sabers. Additionally, his Century King authority grants him control over the Battle Hopper vehicle.
Background
Nobuhiko Akizuki was captured alongside Kotaro Minami by the evil syndicate Gorgom to be converted into Century Kings. While Kotaro escaped during the procedure, Nobuhiko suffered severe internal damage and remained trapped in stasis undergoing further enhancement. Upon fully reviving through the power of the Three High Priests, he emerged as Gorgom's primary warrior, claiming the Satan Saber and waging a ruthless campaign against Kamen Rider BLACK. Though brought down in their tragic final duel, he later resurfaced during the era of Kamen Rider BLACK RX, operating as a wandering adversary seeking one last battle.
Relationships
His central bond is with Kotaro Minami (Kamen Rider BLACK), his former foster brother and closest friend, who becomes his destined archnemesis in the battle for the throne of the Creation King. Despite his emotional suppression, he retains subtle protective instincts toward his biological sister, Kyoko Akizuki, and his former lover, Katsumi Kida. Within Gorgom, he defeated the commander Sword Saint Birugenia in combat to claim the iconic Satan Saber.
Trivia
Shadow Moon is historically significant within the franchise for being one of the earliest primary villain figures to explicitly defeat the protagonist in combat. Due to his unique status as a Century King rather than an officially titled Rider in his debut era, discussions regarding whether he should be classified as a Kamen Rider or a Kaijin (monster) have persisted across fan polls and official media for decades.
