Overview
Kagura Chizuru is a character from SNK's fighting game series, The King of Fighters, first appearing as a sub-boss in The King of Fighters '96. As a descendant of the Yata clan, she acts as the guardian of the Yata Mirror, one of the Three Sacred Treasures tasked with sealing the malevolent entity Orochi. Acting as a mediator between rivals Kusanagi Kyo and Yagami Iori, she plays a central role in unifying the sacred trio to combat the Orochi threat.
Appearance
Chizuru has long black hair tied in a pulled-back style, fixed with a white hairband, and possesses dark eyes. She wears a white long-sleeved top featuring distinctly wide sleeves, front buttons, and pronounced shoulder padding, paired with black trousers. Her accessories include earrings and a bracelet, and she wears red lipstick.
Personality
Despite her composed and mature presence as a college student, Chizuru harbors a intense sense of duty regarding her heritage. While deeply committed to protecting the world, she occasionally displays a self-centered trait by imposing heavy destinies on others despite disliking unfairness. Outside of her serious fighting duties, she is surprisingly accident-prone in daily life, often committing comical blunders that contrast sharply with her refined image.
Abilities
She practices Kagura-style ancient martial arts, combining combat techniques with fluid, dance-like movements. Utilizing the power of the Yata Mirror, Chizuru can generate spectral copies of herself to attack from multiple angles simultaneously. Her fighting style emphasizes restricting opponent actions and sealing their powers through mystical techniques.
Background
Born into the Yata lineage—whose true surname is also Yata—Chizuru inherited the duty of safeguarding the Orochi seal alongside her twin sister, Maki. After Goenitz assassinated Maki and weakened the ancient seal, Chizuru stepped forward to take over the mantle. Under the public identity of the Kagura family, she organized the KOF tournaments to gather powerful warriors and reunite the three sacred bloodlines.
Relationships
She had a twin sister, Kagura Maki, whose death reshaped her life. Bound by heritage, she constantly mediates between Kusanagi Kyo and Yagami Iori to ensure they fulfill their joint destiny. She also maintains contact with figures like Yabuki Shingo, while holding deep rivalries against Goenitz, her sister's killer, and Ash Crimson, who later targeted her sacred powers.
Trivia
Her given name, Chizuru, forms a wordplay with her twin sister Maki's name, drawing from the Japanese idiom associating cranes with a thousand years and turtles with ten thousand years. Contrary to her traditional priestess image, she is a skilled motorcycle enthusiast who has participated in high-level racing competitions. She also keeps a pet Java sparrow named Chi-chan.
