K9999
K9999, pronounced "Kay-Four-Nine," is a character featured in SNK's fighting game series The King of Fighters. Created by the secret organization NESTS as the 9999th clone of Kyo Kusanagi under Project K, he retains virtually no physical resemblance to the original due to excessive cloning processes. He debuted in The King of Fighters 2001 as part of the NESTS Team. Following his removal from later retellings like The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match, he eventually reappeared in The King of Fighters XV under the alter ego Krohnen McDougall.
Overview
K9999, pronounced "Kay-Four-Nine," is a character featured in SNK's fighting game series The King of Fighters. Created by the secret organization NESTS as the 9999th clone of Kyo Kusanagi under Project K, he retains virtually no physical resemblance to the original due to excessive cloning processes. He debuted in The King of Fighters 2001 as part of the NESTS Team. Following his removal from later retellings like The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match, he eventually reappeared in The King of Fighters XV under the alter ego Krohnen McDougall.
Appearance
K9999 initially displays white hair during his entry animation, which shifts to short blue hair when battle begins. He wears goggles and a red cape that converts into a black scarf during combat, alongside orange attire. His most prominent feature is his biological arm, which mutates into a massive, grotesque mass of flesh or mechanical components during special attacks.
Personality
K9999 is immature, highly arrogant, and quick to anger. Due to the psychological side effects of his genetic modifications, his mental state is volatile and prone to violent outbursts. He harbors an intense hatred toward K'—largely stemming from comparisons made between their completion levels—and feels an aggressive rivalry with KUSANAGI. He displays utter contempt for authority, refusing to obey even high-ranking NESTS leaders like Igniz. The sole exception to his hostility is his partner Angel, toward whom he demonstrates a genuine bond of camaraderie.
Abilities
Despite being a clone of Kyo Kusanagi, K9999 inherited almost none of the original's pyrokinesis. Instead, his combat style revolves around mutating his right arm. He can expand his arm into a massive wave of mutated flesh that sweeps across the screen, morph it into a rapid-fire machine gun, or release high-speed energy barriers. His attacks possess immense range and power, particularly when executing gauge-powered super moves, but his abilities suffer from poor energy efficiency and a dangerous lack of physical control.
Background
Engineered after the original Kyo Kusanagi escaped capture, K9999 was a low-quality clone slated for disposal. He avoided termination only when he spontaneously developed the power to shape-shift his arm. Kept in the dark regarding his true identity, he was led to believe his memory loss resulted from physical body modifications. During the tournament, he joined forces with Angel to betray their superior Foxy. Following the collapse of the syndicate, he discovered the truth behind his creation and spent time on the run.
Relationships
K9999 shares a deep mutual trust with Angel, who stands as his only true companion and ally within the syndicate. Conversely, he harbors an obsessive enmity toward K', driven by bitter resentment over K's superior status as a completed subject. He also targets KUSANAGI with intense rivalry, while holding absolute disdain for NESTS superiors such as Igniz.
Trivia
K9999 was heavily inspired by the character Tetsuo Shima from Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga and anime series AKIRA, borrowing visual cues, attack animations, dramatic dialogue, and even his original voice actor, Nozomu Sasaki. Due to the blatant nature of this design homage, K9999 was omitted from the remake title The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match, where his fighting style and moveset were transferred to a substitute character named Nameless.
