Overview

Maxima is a cybernetic fighter introduced in The King of Fighters series starting with The King of Fighters '99. Hailing from Canada, this heavily modified human serves as the steadfast combat partner and protective guardian-like figure to K' throughout their battles against evil syndicates.

Appearance

Maxima stands at an imposing height of 204 centimeters and weighs 219 kilograms, featuring prominent sideburns as his signature visual trait. With eighty to ninety percent of his body transformed into cybernetic systems, his physical frame houses internal mechanisms and heavy weaponry, including analytical measuring devices in his eyes, a cannon in his arm, and beam cannons and missiles integrated within his torso.

Personality

Behind his formidable exterior, Maxima is a rational, honorable, and deeply dependable man. He acts as a calming anchor for the quick-tempered K', patiently listening to his grievances while keeping him in check, and assumes a caring, paternal role toward Kula Diamond. He possesses an intense passion for sweets, frequently devouring parfaits, mango pudding, and souffle rolls. Conversely, he refuses to eat natto and takes little joy in drinking alcohol due to his system rapidly neutralizing liquor. He can also be surprisingly pragmatically minded, even resorting to bank hacking when funding is required.

Abilities

Maxima practices a combat style known as M-Style Martial Arts, utilizing guard points and intense close-range power techniques that take full advantage of his massive frame. His cybernetic eyes serve as analytical measurement devices in combat. He fires his arm cannon during moves like the Vapor Cannon and executes heavy command grabs such as the Maxima Revenger. His capabilities culminate in devastating artillery attacks like End of World, which deploys his torso armor to launch a barrage of missiles and a massive beam. Additionally, his mechanized body affords him expert computer hacking skills.

Background

After a close friend was murdered by the syndicate NESTS, Maxima secretly infiltrated the organization to seek revenge. He volunteered for the Project M cybernetic initiative, relinquishing his birth name in favor of the designation Maxima—derived from his internal Maxima Reactor and its creator, Dr. Makishima. Teaming up with K', he turned against NESTS during The King of Fighters '99 by eliminating the executive Krizalid and escaping, subsequently embarking on a mission to destroy NESTS strongholds. Following the ultimate collapse of NESTS, he works as a mercenary alongside K', taking contracts provided by Heidern through Whip.

Relationships

Maxima shares an unbreakable bond of trust with K', acting as his loyal partner who repeatedly rescues him from danger and softens his sharp demeanor. He acts as a gentle father figure to Kula Diamond, who often teases him. He also maintains an interactive dynamic with Ralf Jones of the Ikari Team. Following NESTS's destruction, Whip serves as his conduit to Heidern for contract operations, while Maxima continues to track down Dr. Makishima whenever his machinery requires technical attention.

Trivia

Maxima's character name and concept derive from an earlier SNK title, Robo Army. His back-story of voluntarily undergoing cybernetic surgery inside an enemy organization for revenge homages Kamen Rider Stronger. Furthermore, his special attacks reference pop culture: Maxima Revenger is inspired by the Muscle Revenger from Kinnikuman, while End of World pays tribute to Kamen Rider Zolda's Final Vent in Kamen Rider Ryuki. For leisure, he enjoys touring on an American SUPER-X motorcycle.
