Overview

Tung Fu Rue is a legendary Chinese martial artist who appears throughout the Fatal Fury series and in The King of Fighters XIV. As the founder and grandmaster of the Hakkyokuseiken fighting style, he stands as a vital figure within South Town's martial arts community, having mentored numerous prominent fighters. Despite his small stature and peaceful appearance, he commands legendary power through mastery of chi, serving both as a wise elder and a formidable competitor in fighting tournaments.

Appearance

He is depicted as a small, bald elderly man with thick eyebrows and a prominent white beard. While his resting physical form is frail and diminutive, he can channel his chi to dramatically alter his physique during the performance of specific attacks, momentarily transforming his entire body or select limbs into a hulking, heavily muscular shape.

Personality

Exuding a serene and patient demeanor, Tung Fu Rue is a compassionate master who deeply cares for his disciples. He dislikes unnecessary luxury and avoids ostentation, preferring a humble lifestyle centered around meditation and attaining harmony with the natural world. Despite enduring personal tragedies through his former students, he remains fundamentally kind, valuing inner discipline, righteousness, and the nurture of the next generation.

Abilities

As the creator of the Hakkyokuseiken martial art, Tung Fu Rue relies on advanced chi manipulation techniques in combat. By channeling his energy, he temporarily expands his physical frame into a muscular giant, enabling him to execute devastating special attacks such as Gekiho, Daishouha, and Senpuu Gouken. He is also proficient in Tai Chi, a martial art he previously claimed to use to conceal his true origin.

Background

After establishing the Hakkyokuseiken discipline in China, Tung Fu Rue trained several highly promising martial artists. However, betrayal and tragedy struck when Geese Howard killed Jeff Bogard, leading Tung to vow never to take another student. Years later, he relented after being deeply moved by the determination of Terry Bogard and Andy Bogard, agreeing to teach them. In his later years, he expanded his legacy by accepting Jin Chonrei, Jin Chonshu, Shun'ei, and Meitenkun as his pupils.

Relationships

He favored Jeff Bogard as his prospective successor, but Jeff was killed by Geese Howard, whom Tung subsequently expelled alongside the dishonest Cheng Sinzan. Tung later raised and taught Jeff's adopted sons, Terry Bogard and Andy Bogard. He eventually trained Jin Chonrei and Jin Chonshu, and later took Shun'ei and Meitenkun under his wing, fighting alongside them in The King of Fighters XIV. Additionally, he maintains close relationships with fellow veteran masters Chin Gentsai and Jubei Yamada.

Trivia

His name is derived from tanghulu, a traditional Chinese candied hawthorn snack. Early official materials used a different set of Chinese characters for his name before standardizing it as Tung Fu Rue in later titles. His favorite food, tea eggs, refers to chayandan, a classic Chinese street food made by slow-boiling cracked eggs in tea and spices.
