Overview

Meliodas is the main protagonist of the series The Seven Deadly Sins. Serving as the captain of the legendary order of knights known as the Seven Deadly Sins, he bears the title of the Dragon's Sin of Wrath. Despite being a demon who has lived for over three thousand years, he maintains the physical appearance of a young adolescent boy, standing in stark contrast to the bearded man depicted on his wanted poster. He travels the land of Britannia operating a mobile tavern called the Boar Hat alongside his companion Hawk, searching for his scattered comrades while maintaining an easygoing and unbothered demeanor.

Appearance

Meliodas presents the physical form of a young boy with short blonde hair and green eyes. On his left bicep, he sports a tattoo of a dragon, representing his sin. He typically wears the staff uniform of his tavern, though he temporarily switches to a revised uniform provided by Elizabeth. When drawing upon his demonic powers, a black mark spreads across his forehead. In Assault Mode, this dark mark expands into a attire-like shape, altering his legs to resemble beastly limbs. Upon achieving his Demon King transformation, the black mark vanishes, and his clothing shifts to resemble that of the Demon King.

Personality

Meliodas possesses a relaxed, lighthearted personality, remaining calm and composed even in dire situations. He judges others without bias regarding their origin or race, earning the deep respect and affection of his diverse knightly companions. However, he is prone to keeping secrets, which occasionally creates misunderstandings or friction with his friends. Although he operates a tavern, his cooking is notoriously terrible despite looking appealing. While he frequently engages in shamelessly inappropriate physical contact, he strictly limits this behavior to two specific women with whom he shares deep romantic bonds.

Abilities

Meliodas boasts exceptional physical strength, capable of cleaving hills with simple implements. His primary magical technique is Full Counter, which reflects magical attacks back at foes with more than double their original power. He can also execute variations such as Counter Vanish to dispel magic, or Revenge Counter to absorb incoming damage and release it in a massive strike. He utilizes demonic techniques like Hellblaze to generate unquenchable black flames and Trillion Dark to launch dense clusters of darkness. When wielding his Sacred Treasure, the sacred sword Lostvayne, he can create physical clones of himself that divide his power. Upon awakening his true magical power, he gains the ability to completely erase targets from existence.

Background

Meliodas is the son of the Demon King and was formerly the leader of the Ten Commandments. Three thousand years ago, he defected to the Goddess Clan, an act that triggered the ancient Holy War. As punishment from the gods, he was inflicted with the Curse of Eternal Life, causing him to resurrect via Purgatory whenever he dies—at the cost of losing a portion of his emotions each time. Centuries later, he served as the Holy Knight Leader of the Kingdom of Danafor, but his demonic powers destroyed the kingdom in a fit of rage after the death of his lover, Liz. He subsequently helped form the Seven Deadly Sins in Liones before being framed for treason and going into hiding.

Relationships

Meliodas travels alongside his talking pig companion Hawk, who cleans up the leftover food from his tavern. He forms an inseparable bond with Elizabeth Liones, joining her journey to save her kingdom. He also retains absolute devotion to his past lover, Liz. Within the Seven Deadly Sins, he maintains close camaraderie with Ban and acts as a trusted leader to King, Diane, Gowther, Merlin, and Escanor. His magical counter-ability was taught to him by his former master, the high demon Chandler. He also shares a conflicted relationship with his younger brother, Zeldris of the Ten Commandments.

Trivia

His moniker as the Dragon's Sin of Wrath stems from the rumor that his overwhelming anger brought about the complete destruction of the Kingdom of Danafor. His Sacred Treasure, the Demon Sword Lostvayne, was originally pawned off by Meliodas himself to raise funds for opening the Boar Hat tavern, before eventually being repurchased by Merlin and returned to him.
