Overview

Shun'Ei is the primary protagonist of the saga introduced in The King of Fighters XIV and leading into The King of Fighters XV. Originating from China, he is a young martial artist trained under the legendary master Tung Fu Rue. In order to suppress and command a chaotic, mysterious power dormant within his body, he combines traditional Hakkyoku Seiken techniques with his spectral abilities to practice a unique martial art known as Hakkyoku Gen'eiken.

Appearance

Shun'Ei is a young fighter characterized by striking red eyes and short green hair with bangs that fall over his eyes. He is almost never seen without his signature headphones, even while wearing martial arts attire, and his outfit features a necktie, a draped jacket, and bandages wrapped around his hands. When channeling his power, he manifests a pair of gigantic spectral arms consisting of a fiery, rugged red left hand and a frozen, sharp-clawed blue right hand.

Personality

While Shun'Ei often maintains a cool, aloof exterior, he is fundamentally a warm-hearted and hot-blooded youth who deeply cares about others. Being fully aware of how volatile and destructive his mysterious energy can be, he is determined to master its control so he will never endanger anyone. Wearing his headphones and bandages serves as a sensory routine to help suppress his power. Off the battleground, he exhibits a youthful personality, loving sweet foods, disliking bitter tastes, and relaxing to music such as songs by Athena Asamiya.

Abilities

Shun'Ei utilizes Hakkyoku Gen'eiken, a fighting style that incorporates his spectral manifestations into the foundational martial art of Hakkyoku Seiken. By projecting giant phantom hands, he gains incredible attack range and commands a balanced arsenal including charge attacks, anti-air maneuvers, aerial repositioning, and ranged projectiles. His special moves include Scarlet Phantom, Aqua Spear, Rising Iffreet, Blau Wing, and Thruster Vision, which build into devastating super combinations such as Gaianic Burst, Specter Extension, Demolish Dimension, and Phantom Singulation.

Background

As a young child, Shun'Ei was given up by his biological parents due to his dangerous, uncontrollable power—though it was later revealed that they relinquished him out of protective love before his energy could harm those around them. He was taken in by master Tung Fu Rue, who raised him as his final disciple alongside his best friend Meitenkun. To test his ability to keep his power in check, he entered The King of Fighters XIV, where his power unexpectedly resonated with the entity Verse. In The King of Fighters XV, he forms the Hero Team alongside Meitenkun and Nikaido Benimaru to confront the multiversal crisis involving his rival Isla.

Relationships

Shun'Ei deeply reveres his master and surrogate father, Tung Fu Rue, continuously striving to repay the master's guidance. He shares an inseparable friendship with his fellow disciple Meitenkun, with whom he has trained since childhood. During The King of Fighters XV, he forms a team with Nikaido Benimaru—who stepped in for Kyo Kusanagi—and comes to rely on Benimaru's caring, experienced nature. He is also aggressively pursued as a rival by Isla, a fellow power-user who similarly projects giant spectral hands.

Trivia

Shun'Ei's most prized belongings are keepsakes left behind by his biological parents. Alongside his dedication to martial arts, he excels at all kinds of ball sports. His iconic habit of wearing headphones at all times—even during intense battles or formal training—functions alongside his hand bandages as a psychological anchoring technique designed to help him maintain emotional composure and prevent his spectral powers from running wild.
