Aoi Zaizen

Overview

Aoi Zaizen is a primary character in Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, attending the same high school as Yusaku Fujiki and participating in the Duel Club. Quiet and reserved in the real world, she operates within the virtual space of LINK VRAINS as a celebrated Celebrity Duelist known as Blue Angel. As the story progresses, she undergoes key personal developments, changing her virtual identity to Blue Girl and later Blue Maiden to assist her allies and confront emerging threats.

Appearance

In the real world, Aoi has brown hair and yellow eyes, wearing a modest hair fashion compared to other duelists. Her initial avatar, Blue Angel, features bright blue hair styled in twintails, decorative face paint, and a bright, angel-themed aesthetic complete with wings, hair bows, and heart-shaped earrings. When switching to her Blue Girl identity, she adopts a more functional, mobility-oriented outfit, followed by another distinct costume design upon taking the moniker Blue Maiden.

Personality

In her daily life, Aoi is soft-spoken and avoids standing out, having grown distrustful of others due to people approaching her solely to gain connections to her stepbrother, Akira Zaizen. As Blue Angel, however, she exhibits a lively, cheerful demeanour. She harbors deep affection and respect for her brother, often taking risks in hopes of gaining his approval. Despite her quiet exterior, she displays a resolute and fearless attitude during duels, stubbornly facing frontwards no matter the injuries or hardships encountered.

Abilities

Aoi commands a Fairy-type deck known as Trickstar, utilizing card destruction and relentless effect damage strategy anchored by key monsters such as Trickstar Holly Angel. Her play style incorporates tactics like boosting attack power through Trickstar Corobein and deploying fusion monsters like Trickstar Band Sweet Guitar. In Speed Duels, she utilizes specific Duel Skills including Trickstar Fraud and Trickstar Gig.

Background

Aoi became related to Akira Zaizen when her mother remarried his father, and Akira raised her after both parents died in an accident. Aiming to win her brother's acknowledgement, she dueled actively in LINK VRAINS, but was targeted by Specter with a computer virus that caused her to fall into a coma. Following her recovery, she joined the struggle against the Knights of Hanoi and the search for the Ignis, transforming her motivation from seeking recognition to protecting others alongside allies like Emma Bessho and the Water Ignis, Aqua.

Relationships

Her stepbrother, Akira Zaizen, is her most precious family member who raised her through hardship. She attends school with Yusaku Fujiki (Playmaker) and eventually establishes a reliable bond with him through various conflicts. Emma Bessho (Ghost Gal) acts as her mentor and tactical partner, having also coined her avatar name Blue Girl. She later forms a strong partnership with the Water Ignis, Aqua, after discovering the truth behind the condition of her childhood friend, Miyu Sugisaki.

Trivia

The name and concept of her Blue Angel avatar derive from a picture book of the same title that she holds dear as a personal treasure. Within the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, she serves as a prominent female lead duelist following Yuzu Hiragi from Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V.
