Appearance
Yuya has a somewhat androgynous face with red cat-like eyes and distinctive spiky hair featuring a red and green color scheme that resembles a tomato. His outfit consists of an orange shirt, green pants, a choker, a pendulum pendant around his neck, and a uniform jacket draped over his shoulders. He wears goggles on his head featuring a blue star on the right lens, which he initially uses to hide tears when emotionally hurt, and later wears when steeling his resolve. During berserk moments, his hair spikes upward and his eyes glow red.
Personality
Yuya is typically a cheerful and spirited 14-year-old with a theatrical flair, treating duels as performances to bring joy to spectators. However, due to the lingering trauma of his father's sudden disappearance, he experiences emotional fragility and can falter or go berserk under severe stress or disadvantage. Strongly opposing the use of duels as conflict or violence, Yuya seeks mutual understanding through entertainment rather than sheer domination. He also acts as a caring and supportive figure toward younger duelists at his school.

Yuya possesses impressive athleticism, allowing him to maneuver swiftly across the field during Action Duels to retrieve Action Cards. As the first duelist to perform a Pendulum Summon, he utilizes cards like Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon as his primary force. Over time, he expands his arsenal to master Fusion, Xyz, and Synchro Summoning, eventually becoming a highly versatile duelist capable of utilizing all four major summoning methods in battle.
Background
After his father vanished right before a major championship match three years prior, Yuya grew up enduring public scorn as the son of a runner. Seeking to clear his father's name, he stepped into an exhibition match against Strong Ishijima, during which his pendant glowed and unlocked Pendulum Summoning, leading him to victory. As he competed to qualify for the Maiami Championship, Yuya became dragged into a larger conflict involving an interdimensional war, alternate dimensional counterparts sharing his face, and a dark entity tied to his origin.
Relationships
Yuya shares a deep bond with his childhood friend Hiiragi Yuzu. He is raised by his parents Sakaki Yusho and Sakaki Yoko, drawing heavy inspiration from his father's dueling philosophy. He maintains a complex rivalry and partnership with Akaba Reiji of the Leo Corporation. Furthermore, he shares identical faces with his alternate dimensional counterparts—Yuto, Yugo, and Yuri—and inherits Yuto's card along with his wishes.
Trivia
Unlike previous protagonists whose hairstyles were often likened to sea creatures, Yuya's red-and-green hair design is frequently compared to a tomato. His visual design also incorporates elements inspired by Yami Yugi, such as his neck choker and the jacket draped over his shoulders.
