Overview

Kibaou is a supporting character from the light novel series Sword Art Online and its various adaptations. Trapped inside the virtual reality MMORPG of the same name, he emerges during the early floor boss raid meetings as a passionate player determined to clear the game. He originally commands the guild known as the Aincrad Liberation Squad (ALS), forming one of the two major frontline factions alongside Lind's guild. Later, following heavy casualties on the upper floors, he merges his remaining forces to help establish the large-scale faction known as the Aincrad Liberation Force (ALF), where he serves as sub-leader.

Appearance

Kibaou is characterized by his distinctive, spiky chestnut-brown hair that resembles a cactus, accompanied by a matching chestnut eye color and a small goatee on his chin. Later in the game, upon assuming authority within the Aincrad Liberation Force, he wears a rigid, military-style uniform.

Personality

Speaking in a distinct Kansai dialect, Kibaou is quick-tempered, rough around the edges, and highly ambitious. Early on, he harbors severe animosity toward former beta testers, blaming them for keeping valuable information to themselves. Despite his abrasive demeanor, he harbors a strong desire to see the game cleared and possesses a surprisingly perceptive side, secretly appreciating Kirito's sacrifices despite their public clashes. However, the psychological toll of heavy losses eventually drives him toward desperation, making his leadership increasingly authoritarian and ruthless.

Abilities

Kibaou wields a one-handed sword in combat. In addition to his individual fighting capabilities, his primary strength lies in his leadership and motivational skills, which allow him to rally large numbers of players and organize major frontline factions.

Background

After making a strong impression during the 1st Floor Boss raid meeting by confronting beta testers, Kibaou led the Aincrad Liberation Squad in front-line clearing efforts. However, his faction suffered catastrophic casualties on the 25th Floor due to misleading intelligence, effectively knocking them off the front lines. Seeking a new path, he merged his surviving members with Thinker's group to create the Aincrad Liberation Force. Serving as sub-leader, Kibaou grew tyrannical, enforcing strict quota collections in lower floors and sending ill-prepared troops to fight the 74th Floor boss to recover his prestige. When that failed, he attempted to secure total control by trapping Thinker in a deep dungeon using a Corridor Crystal. The plot was foiled, leading to Kibaou's complete expulsion from the guild. He ultimately survived the SAO incident and logged out safely.

Relationships

His relationship with Kirito began with intense friction over Kirito's status as a beta tester, directly contributing to Kirito being branded a 'Beater,' though Kibaou privately acknowledged Kirito's true intentions. He maintained a sharp rivalry with Lind, the leader of the opposing frontline guild DKB. Later, he served under Thinker in the newly formed ALF, but grew increasingly dissatisfied with Thinker's passive management, eventually betraying him in an attempt to usurp control.

Trivia

In the original light novel, the character who directly berates Kirito after the 1st Floor Boss raid is a follower of Lind, but the anime adaptation reassigned this role directly to Kibaou. During an official popularity poll held for an artbook release, fan-driven joke voting unexpectedly pushed Kibaou into 10th place, resulting in him appearing on the back cover of the artbook and inspiring a special comedic short story by the author.
