Overview
Mito, whose real name in the physical world is Misumi Tozawa, is a major character introduced in the animated film Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night. She is a close friend and classmate of Asuna Yuuki at Aeterna Girls' Academy, excelling in both academics and athletics while maintaining an avid gaming background. After encouraging Asuna to join Sword Art Online, both become trapped within the death game. Leveraging her experience as a former beta tester, she navigates the frontline of Aincrad. In expanded novel storylines, she is also recognized as the second tailor to adopt the title of Ashley, a skilled artisan responsible for crafting specialized non-metallic armor.
Appearance
Mito's avatar features light purple hair styled in a ponytail, red eyes, and a white X-shaped hair clip securing her right hair strands. She wears a dark purple outfit underneath a white cloak, paired with a culotte skirt and long boots. Her armor consists of light equipment, including a breastplate and arm guards. Immediately after the death game commenced, her hair and eye colors temporarily reflected her real-world appearance, which features black hair. During the beta test, she utilized a tall male avatar with large eyes, slicked-back hair, a mask, dark tights under long boots, and similar base gear. By the fifth floor of Aincrad, her attire transitions into a design reminiscent of a ninja or assassin.
Personality
Mito shares a strategic mindset and pragmatic approach to gaming reminiscent of Kirito. When confronted with extreme stress, she exhibits human vulnerability, such as choosing to escape out of terror of witnessing her closest friend's death. She carries a profound sense of guilt and remorse over her decisions, which at times drives her toward self-destructive combat choices out of a desire for atonement. Her habit of using her feet to clear obstacles, kick open chests, or initiate low attacks is a distinctive behavioral quirk. She also forms strong personal preferences for specific drinks once she discovers them.
Abilities
During the early stages of the game, Mito acts as a dedicated front-line warrior wielding a large scythe, a rare weapon type characterized by wide strike zones and status debuffs. Her arsenal includes specialized Sword Skills such as Mower and the low-sweeping area attack Feller, along with proficiency in the Thrown Weapon skill. She later shifts her combat style to a complex chain-sickle that can extend its weight, lengthen its blade, or reconfigure back into a scythe. Beyond her combat skills, she possesses master-level tailoring capabilities, crafting high-tier non-metallic armor for elite players.
Background
After forming a close friendship with Asuna Yuuki at school, Misumi introduced her to Sword Art Online, only for both to become trapped when the full launch transitioned into a death game. She initially took on a protective role, guiding Asuna through the mechanics of Aincrad. However, during a tragic sequence of events on the first floor involving a swarm of monsters, fear overwhelmed her and she severed their party bond, believing Asuna was lost. Wracked with remorse, Mito threw herself into dangerous frontline combat until she unexpectedly encountered Asuna alive during the first floor boss raid, where the two reconciled.
Relationships
Asuna Yuuki is Mito's closest companion from the real world. Though a tragic misunderstanding and a moment of panic threatened to sever their bond permanently, their mutual trust was restored during the first floor boss raid. Kirito is an acquaintance from the beta test period, having partnered with Mito to complete an early quest; later in Aincrad, they recognize each other's combat competence. Following her escape from the game, strict interference from her family temporarily cut off her digital communication, but she eventually reconnects with Asuna through the intervention of Argo (Tomo Hosaka).
Trivia
An early visual concept proposed for her male beta test avatar was inspired by Voldo from Soul Edge. Conceptually designed to reflect a female counterpart to Kirito in terms of gameplay efficiency, her character arc bridges both film adaptations and printed light novel expansions. Upon returning to the real world, strict parental restrictions led to the cancellation of her network accounts and mobile devices, temporarily severing her contact with her former gaming companions.
