Sinon

Overview

Asada Shino, known primarily by her avatar name Sinon, is the main heroine of the Phantom Bullet arc in the Sword Art Online series. As one of the few female players in the firearm-focused VRMMO Gun Gale Online (GGO), she has built a reputation as a top-tier sniper capable of competing at the highest level of player-versus-player tournaments. Driven to play by a tragic past in the real world, her encounters with Kirito and her subsequent adventures across various virtual realities help her overcome her emotional trauma and gain lasting companions.

Appearance

In Gun Gale Online, Sinon features short aqua-blue hair with distinct clips and matching eyes. Her attire consists of a green sniper's jacket paired with a white scarf and black leotard shorts. In the real world, she is a high school student with short dark hair who wears half-rimmed glasses. In ALfheim Online, her Cait Sith avatar includes cat ears and a tail, while her Sun Goddess Solus form in the Underworld grants her a blue and white outfit accompanied by a floating single wing on her back.

Personality

Sinon possesses a cool, composed demeanor and strong determination, though she often manifests a slightly tsundere side around those close to her. Her outwardly confident persona in virtual worlds covers deep childhood trauma and severe PTSD caused by a fatal robbery incident. She originally entered Gun Gale Online as a form of exposure therapy to overcome her phobia of firearms. After resolving her past conflicts, she opens up to her friends, showing a more affectionate and warmhearted personality.

Abilities

In GGO, Sinon specializes in long-range precision sniping, using the heavy anti-materiel rifle PGM Ultima Ratio Hécate II alongside a sub-arm such as the MP7 or Glock 18C. In ALfheim Online, she applies her sharp aiming skills to archery without system assistance. While logged into the Underworld using the Sun Goddess Solus super-account, she gains unlimited flight capabilities and wields the divine bow Annihilate Ray, which fires wide-area destructive energy blasts.

Background

Having lost her father in a car accident at an early age, Shino was involved in a bank robbery at age eleven, where she fatally shot the perpetrator to protect her mother. The incident left her with severe gun trauma. She joined GGO in hopes that conquering her fear inside a game would cure her real-life phobia. Joining forces with Kirito during the Bullet of Bullets tournament to defeat Death Gun helped her face her past. Afterward, she joined ALfheim Online and built close friendships with Asuna and the others.

Relationships

She forms a profound bond with Kazuto Kirigaya (Kirito); despite an initial misunderstanding regarding his avatar's appearance, their shared trauma creates a mutual understanding that gradually matures into romantic feelings. She also builds a tight friendship with Asuna Yuuki, who affectionately calls her 'Shinonon.' Her former friend Kyouji Shinkawa became her primary adversary during the Death Gun incident.

Trivia

Her signature weapon, the Hécate II, was acquired after accidentally falling into a dungeon trap door where she defeated a boss enemy by repeatedly landing headshots until her ammo was virtually exhausted. She once purchased a light saber in GGO following a trend set by Kirito, but after failing to master it, kept it in her storage as a lucky charm.
