Overview

Astalos is a Flying Wyvern first introduced in Monster Hunter X (Monster Hunter Generations). Serving as one of the four flagship monsters known as the Fated Four, it earns epithets such as the Rebel of Thunder and the Ruffian of the Sky. It is characterized by its hyper-aggressive nature and its ability to generate intense fluorescent lightning by vibrating specialized organs across its body.

Appearance

Astalos features a slender build roughly 17 meters in total length including its tail pincers, covered in sharp golden and black spiked carapace. Its head bears a blade-like crest and normally red eyes. The transparent wing membranes display patterns reminiscent of stained glass or insect wings, fitted with wing claws extending forward and downward. Its spiked, scissor-like tail terminates in a two-pronged tip. Upon reaching its Charge State, the head crest expands with green glowing lines as its eyes turn bright green, the wing membranes emit a vivid emerald light, and the tail enlarges, splitting into four brightly illuminated prongs.

Personality

Astalos exhibits an exceptionally aggressive and relentless nature. Because its parents abandon their eggs without rearing the young, hatchlings must fight for survival independently from birth, molding a highly hostile temperament. It attacks any creature entering its territory without hesitation, even large wyverns. Should an opponent flee or lose its will to fight, Astalos pursues them relentlessly. When driven by hunger, it will even commit cannibalism against its own kind.

Abilities

By vibrating the piezoelectric organs in its crest, wings, and tail, Astalos generates powerful fluorescent yellow-green electricity rivaling lightning strikes. Its wing beats create electromagnetic waves that paralyze small insect monsters like Vespoids for easy prey. In combat, it delivers heavy wing strikes and deep tears using its sharp wing claws. Its tail can clamp targets to discharge electricity directly or drive into the ground to shock a wide area. In its Charge State, its attack range and lethality expand: the head forms a massive blade of electrical energy, and the four-pronged tail unleashes wide-area electrical blasts. When fully charged, it emits massive area-wide electrical bursts and performs diving strikes wrapped in lightning. However, charged body parts become softer, and inflicting continuous damage or forcing fatigue will cancel the charge state.

Background

Astalos was first identified as a new Flying Wyvern species in locations such as the Forest and Hills near Kokotto Village. Introduced in Monster Hunter X as one of the four flagship monsters alongside Glavenus, Mizutsune, and Gammoth, it earned a reputation as a major ecological menace capable of disrupting local environments. Its observed behaviors include ruthlessly preying on Velocidrome and mounting aerial ambushes against Rathalos. It reappeared with a formidable Deviant form known as Boltreaver Astalos in Monster Hunter Double Cross, and later returned as a huntable monster in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.

Relationships

Astalos maintains a fierce rivalry with Rathalos over aerial dominance, ambossing the King of the Skies on sight. As part of the quartet introduced in Monster Hunter X alongside Glavenus, Mizutsune, and Gammoth, it shares a special connection with them, engaging in violent turf wars with Mizutsune in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. Its recognized prey includes species such as Velocidrome and Vespoid.

Trivia

The Japanese name Raizex merges the Japanese word for thunder with the German word for insect (Insekt). Its design blends motifs from various creatures, including treehopper crests, dragonfly tails, praying mantis grooming behaviors, cricket vibrations, bioluminescent jellyfish lighting, and pterosaur features. This design serves as a thematic antithesis to Rathalos, replacing parental affection with cold insectoid instinct. Craftable weapons are typically named after gemstones such as emeralds and beryls, featuring names and descriptions that parody Rathalos gear, while its armor sets evoke the visual style of villainous commanders from tokusatsu media.
