Overview

Nergigante is an Elder Dragon that serves as the flagship monster of Monster Hunter: World. Designated as the Extinction Dragon, it is renowned for its terrifying physical strength and body-covering spikes, relying on raw brute force rather than elemental breath attacks.

Appearance

A pitch-black dragon featuring four robust limbs, a tail, and a pair of broad wings that often fold over its shoulders. Its underbelly is reddish-brown with subtle purple accents, and two thick, demon-like horns curve backward from its head. The monster's body is protected by a tough shell and covered in countless spikes of various sizes, particularly clustered along its head, wings, forearms, and tail.

Personality

Extremely aggressive and brutal even among Elder Dragons, Nergigante targets any creature in its vision for violent destruction. Despite its perpetually bloodthirsty stance, it exhibits surprisingly calm habits when unprovoked, such as sharpening its claws or rubbing against the ground to groom its spikes. It maintains a wide personal boundary and offers only a brief warning stance before attacking.

Abilities

Foregoing breath attacks and elemental magic, Nergigante fights exclusively with immense physical force and dense armaments of spikes. It possesses rapid regenerative powers, allowing broken spikes to regrow in mere seconds. Newly formed white spikes act as tender weak points, but they darken and harden into impenetrable black thorns over several minutes. When fully covered in hardened black spikes, it delivers its ultimate technique, 'Heaven's Ruin', swooping down from the sky to shatter its spikes over a massive area.

Background

In Monster Hunter: World, Nergigante serves as the central threat driving the story and the first Elder Dragon hunters are formally tasked with hunting. It also appears in Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin as a formidable late-game story boss, after which players can acquire its egg from rare nests to make it a companion Otomon.

Relationships

It frequently enters fierce Turf Wars with rival Elder Dragons such as Kushala Daora and Lunastra. During these confrontations, Nergigante demonstrates supreme physical dominance, easily stopping incoming monster charges and slamming its opponents into the ground.

Trivia

Its name is believed to derive from a combination of the Mesopotamian underworld deity Nergal and the mythological term Gigantes. Due to its name and the look of its white emerging spikes, fans widely refer to it by the affectionate nickname 'Negi'. Its specialized battle track is named 'The Monster Maw that Threatens Elder Dragons'.
