Valstrax

Introduced as a flagship Elder Dragon in Monster Hunter XX, Valstrax is known by titles such as the Sky Comet Dragon and the Silver Winged Evil Star. Inhabiting ultra-high altitude environments like the Ruined Pinnacle, it was long observed only as a crimson streak traversing the skies. By inhaling air and converting it into concentrated dragon element energy within its chest, it propels itself at supersonic speeds using jet-like wing exhausts, establishing its reputation as a terrifying force alongside Bloodbath Diablos.

Overview

Introduced as a flagship Elder Dragon in Monster Hunter XX, Valstrax is known by titles such as the Sky Comet Dragon and the Silver Winged Evil Star. Inhabiting ultra-high altitude environments like the Ruined Pinnacle, it was long observed only as a crimson streak traversing the skies. By inhaling air and converting it into concentrated dragon element energy within its chest, it propels itself at supersonic speeds using jet-like wing exhausts, establishing its reputation as a terrifying force alongside Bloodbath Diablos.

Appearance

Valstrax has a streamlined body covered in silver scales and shell plating that protects it from ultraviolet rays at extreme altitudes. Although large, its head and tail are remarkably slender. Unlike standard flying wyverns or elder dragons, its wings lack membranes, taking the form of specialized spear-like appendages known as spear wings. Its chest houses air intakes. When enraged, dragon energy causes its head and wing joints to glow with a red and black aura, while its body color darkens as if scorched.

Personality

Valstrax leads a solitary existence in extreme altitudes far beyond the reach of most other creatures. Ancient legends portrayed it as a harbinger of doom that descended once every few millennia to reduce entire civilizations to ash. Though encounters with humans are exceedingly rare, it exhibits a fierce and relentless hostility in battle, overwhelming any who intrude upon its territory with high-speed aggression.

Abilities

Valstrax converts air drawn through its chest into pure dragon energy, expelling it through its spear wings to achieve supersonic jet propulsion. By adjusting its wing angle and energy output, it can hover with high maneuverability. Its versatile wings can flex and combine into a single spear for thrusts, sweep like giant blades, or slam down like heavy hammers. They can also shift forward into twin three-barreled cannons to launch energetic projectiles or intense continuous beams. Its signature attack, Comet, involves ascending high into the atmosphere before delivering a devastating, high-precision diving strike.

Background

Known for generations only as a mysterious red comet streaking across the sky, Valstrax was long believed to be a mythical entity or an extinct species. Its true nature was confirmed when the Wycademy launched high-altitude research expeditions using airships around the Ruined Pinnacle. Following its official registry by the Hunter's Guild in Monster Hunter XX, it became a major subject of study, leading to later sightings of mutated variants such as Crimson Glow Valstrax in various ecosystems.

Relationships

In Monster Hunter XX, Valstrax is paired with Bloodbath Diablos, a powerful Diablos variant, as the flagship duo known as the Unrivaled Two. Its habits and unique physiology were gradually uncovered through the dedicated efforts of the Wycademy and the researchers aboard the Dragonship.

Trivia

The name Valstrax originates from a blend of the English words "valor" and "falcon." Early design concepts initially envisioned a monster based on a killer whale that manipulated iron sand using magnetic forces. When defeated in battle, it exhibits a detailed animation accompanied by a sound effect mimicking a failing jet engine. In the 20th-anniversary series popularity polls, it secured 4th place in the overall monster ranking and 1st place in the background music category.
