Gore Magala
Gore Magala is a prominent large monster introduced as the flagship creature of Monster Hunter 4, also known by the moniker Black Eclipse Dragon. Marked by its dark black and purple coloration, this eyeless beast perceives its environment by spreading specialized pollen-like scales from its wings to trace spatial positions and heat signatures. Overview
Long cataloged under the mysterious classification of triple question marks due to its unique biological traits, it was later revealed to be the juvenile stage of the Elder Dragon Shagaru Magala and officially categorized under the Demi Elder classification in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Appearance
Gore Magala features dark black and purplish-blue scales intermingled with hair-like structures. Its head is rounded without visible eyes, resting atop a body structure with long front limbs and shorter hind legs. On its back sit massive wing-legs that function as an additional pair of limbs. Upon reaching a heightened sensory state known as Frenzy mode, a pair of feelers erect from its head, and its folded wing-claws unfold into a fully six-legged posture. It is equipped with sharp teeth, claws, and a severable tail.
Personality
As a wild predator, Gore Magala exhibits high hostility and intense territorial aggression. It approaches potential threats and prey without hesitation, ruthlessly overpowering other monsters through sheer physical dominance. When its sensory capacity peaks, it lays claim to its immediate surroundings as exclusive territory, refusing to abandon the area while engaged with intruders.
Abilities
It disperses dark, pollen-like scales from its wings to track the heat and location of surrounding creatures. These scales spread the Frenzy Virus, driving infected organisms into a rabid, weakened state. The creature possesses high flight capability, enabling it to soar rapidly, execute swooping aerial assaults, and discharge purple breath attacks. In its Frenzied state, it slams its unfolded wing-legs onto the terrain to generate tremors and restrain opponents. It suffers high vulnerability to fire-elemental attacks.
Background
In the narrative of Monster Hunter 4, Gore Magala made a dramatic entrance by ambushing a wounded Tigrex and snapping its neck. Subsequent research by the Hunter's Guild uncovered that this creature is actually the immature form of the Elder Dragon Shagaru Magala, destined to shed its dark skin and assume a luminous adult form. Lacking biological male or female sexes, it reproduces by dispersing reproductive agents via its virus into host organisms. Individuals whose molting process is disrupted by viral interference become the agonizing variant known as Chaotic Gore Magala.
Relationships
Shagaru Magala is the fully matured Elder Dragon form that Gore Magala becomes after successfully molting. Chaotic Gore Magala represents a tragic variant resulting from a failed molting process caused by the growth-inhibiting effects of another individual's Frenzy Virus. In combat encounters and cinematic depictions, Gore Magala has demonstrated absolute dominance over physical powerhouses such as Tigrex and Goss Harag, suppressing them before infecting them with virus-laden scales.
Trivia
Enthusiasts affectionately nickname the monster Goma-chan. Its rare high-rank drop, the Black Eclipse Gem, cannot be obtained through capture rewards, requiring hunters to successfully slay the beast. Weapons crafted from its materials share a distinctive naming convention combining Katakana-derived English terms with the word "of", such as Pride of Shadow. Its unique bodily structure, referred to as the Magala skeleton, served as the anatomical foundation for subsequent prominent monsters like Nergigante and Valstrax. In the Monster Hunter 20th Anniversary Official Popularity Poll, Gore Magala secured an impressive 5th place finish.
