Overview
The Canyne is a Fanged Beast-type Buddy introduced in Monster Hunter Rise. Operating alongside Felynes, it serves as a dedicated hunting companion, offering active offensive support and swift transportation by carrying Hunters on its back.
Appearance
The Canyne is a Fanged Beast characterized by its distinct, wolf-like body structure. Its visual traits can be fully customized by the player during character creation. In Monster Hunter Stories 2, individual Canynes exhibit different coat colors corresponding to their elemental attributes. In battle, it equips dedicated gear such as iron umbrellas and specialized scrolls.
Personality
Unlike Felynes, the Canyne cannot speak human language and lacks high manual dexterity, yet it possesses enough intelligence to manage tasks like trading and running errands. It exhibits firm loyalty toward Hunters and displays an aggressive, highly active demeanor during combat.
Abilities
The Canyne enables Hunters to travel rapidly on its back without depleting stamina, allowing item consumption and weapon sharpening while moving. It utilizes specialized Canyne Gear to perform attacks with sickles, fangs, shurikens, and Silkbind arrows, defend with iron umbrellas, and apply buffs or healing via medicinal scrolls. Its combat distance relative to targets can be tailored by the Hunter. In spin-off titles, it functions as a Speed-type Monstie capable of jump and vine-climb actions, executing the ink-styled Kinship Skill Rising Axel.
Background
Originating in Kamura Village, the practice of training Canynes as ridden hunting partners began as a regional custom, though they were later adopted by knights in the Kingdom region of Elgado. No wild individuals have been confirmed, leaving their natural origin unknown. In derivative works, they hold sacred status, such as in Dog Guard Village, where the final remaining Canyne is worshipped as a protective deity.
Relationships
The Canyne forms a core partnership with the Hunter, providing movement and direct battle assistance alongside the Felyne Buddy. In Kamura Village, Garuku Master Inukai oversees its training and provides insight into its habits, while knights in Elgado rely on it as an essential partner.
Trivia
The Canyne appears as a HOPE-rank Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, placing it at a higher tier than the Felyne Spirit. While depicted carrying Hunters in-game, real-world canines cannot sustain human weight on their backs due to their spinal anatomy during running, which can cause severe injury.
