Overview

Gammoth is a massive Fanged Beast introduced in Monster Hunter Generations, serving as one of the four flagship monsters known as the Fated Four. Inhabiting frigid environments such as snowy mountains and frozen seaways, she reigns at the apex of her local ecosystem. Designed around a woolly mammoth blended with mythical cyclopean motifs, she is famously known as the Immovable Mountain God due to her overwhelming physical presence and static, mountain-like majesty.

Appearance

Gammoth possesses a colossal body exceeding 20 meters in total length and standing roughly 14 meters tall. Vibrant blue and red fur coats her body, with a thick, coarse red mane running from behind her neck across her back. Heavy shell armor covers her head like a crown, and her shoulders bear patterns resembling a single eye. Broad, spatula-tipped tusks curve outward from her lower jaw, alongside a remarkably long trunk. Her legs and tail can be encrusted in dense ice and snow. Young calves feature pure white fur, while elderly individuals display white patches on their coat.

Personality

Despite being entirely herbivorous, Gammoth exhibits an extremely fierce territorial instinct to survive in unforgiving frozen climates. She relentlessly attacks intruders with her colossal weight. Driven by an insatiable appetite, food scarcity makes her exceptionally violent, leading her to raid human settlements and consume wooden structures. Although solitary wanderers by nature, mother Gammoths share an exceptionally powerful bond with their offspring, demonstrating terrifying ferocity against any potential threats.

Abilities

Gammoth generates massive ground vibrations with her stomps and utilizes devastating body presses and trunk slams that shatter the frozen terrain. Her trunk operates with precision and brute force: she can suck opponents toward herself, craft and hurl giant snowballs, snort precise ice projectiles, and unleash wide-spread icy breath. She possesses enough strength to lift and throw large Flying Wyverns. When enraged, she chains trunk slams with vacuum draws. By coating her limbs and tail in ice, she hardens her defenses and scatters sharp snow fragments during stomps to widen her impact area.

Background

Reigning at the apex of frozen regions, the adult Gammoth encountered by hunters are protective females. Vulnerable calves born with white camouflage fur initially stay close to their mothers. To improve calf survival, mothers integrate their young into herds of Popo; the Popo help protect the calves from smaller predators, while the mother Gammoth shields the entire herd from dangerous apex predators like Tigrex. However, when food scarcity forces a Gammoth to invade human villages and destroy property, the Hunter's Guild issues urgent hunting quests to quell the threat.

Relationships

Gammoth shares a symbiotic relationship with Popo herds, using them to shelter her vulnerable calves while serving as the herd's ultimate defender. Tigrex is her natural nemesis; trauma experienced during her youth instills a deep hostility towards Tigrex in adulthood, allowing an adult Gammoth to easily match or overpower it in combat. Along with Astalos, Mizutsune, and Glavenus, she forms the quartet of flagship monsters known as the Fated Four in Monster Hunter Generations.

Trivia

Gammoth's name derives from Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu deity, and Mammut, the German word for mammoth. Fully upgraded weapons crafted from her materials feature bizarre onomatopoeic names such as Zubashaaan, which gain the suffix MAX upon reaching G-rank. Unique among monsters, Gammoth triggers a ground vibration during her fatal defeat animation. Her female armor set is particularly well regarded by players for its fluffy, charming aesthetic.
