Overview
A prominent Leviathan-class monster that served as the flagship creature for Monster Hunter 3. Revered as the Lord of the Seas and the apex predator of the ocean, it stands as a direct counterpart to Rathalos, the King of the Skies. It dominates both aquatic and terrestrial environments through devastating electrical abilities.
Appearance
It features a prolonged body with four legs reminiscent of large reptiles such as crocodiles, clad entirely in blue scales and carapace, with its total length exceeding 26 meters. Along its back sit crystalline protrusions known as shock-shells that store and generate electricity. When enraged, its horns become charged and glow bluish-white.
Personality
Fiercely aggressive and highly territorial, it is dreaded by fishermen as a destructive sea terror capable of wrecking massive vessels. While behaving as a ruthless predator in the ocean, it occasionally comes ashore to rest, sunbathe, and hunt prey like Epioth when exhausted.
Abilities
It stores power within its dorsal shock-shells to spit spherical thunder projectiles and unleash broad electrical discharges surrounding its body. Thanks to immense lung capacity, a single breath allows it to remain active underwater for half a day. Underwater, it can trap prey inside a massive whirlpool before unleashing a devastating electrical blast, while on land it utilizes tackles, tracking bites, linear lightning trails, and orbiting electric orbs.
Background
During the frequent earthquakes impacting Moga Village, it appeared near Moga Woods and was targeted for hunting under the suspicion of causing the tremors due to its previous attacks on trading ships. However, it was later revealed that the true culprit was the Elder Dragon Ceadeus residing in the underwater ruins, clearing Lagiacrus of false accusations. In Monster Hunter Wilds, it appears as an invasive species entering from beyond the Forbidden Lands in search of rich prey.
Relationships
It shares a fierce rival relationship with Rathalos, confronting the King of the Skies in high-stakes turf wars over prey. Its wrongful accusation regarding Moga Village's earthquakes was cleared after information brought back by the Shakalaka Cha-Cha exposed Ceadeus. It also maintains territorial and ecological rivalries with other Leviathans such as Uzu Tuna and Royal Ludroth.
Trivia
It possesses notable variants, including the land-adapted Ivory Lagiacrus subspecies and the black-armored Abyssal Lagiacrus rare species. A visual glitch in early titles causing it to appear as if swimming through the air became famous, later serving as inspiration for special attack animations in spin-off titles. Its battle theme, 'Co-existence of Land and Sea,' remains widely celebrated among players.
