Overview

Dunban is a character from Nintendo's role-playing game Xenoblade Chronicles. A 30-year-old Homs warrior, he is revered as a legendary hero who wielded the Monado during the war against the Mechonis to protect the Bionis. He is the older brother of Fiora and serves as a dependable mentor figure and elder brother to Shulk and his companions on their journey.

Appearance

Dunban is a tall, muscular Homs man with long black hair, a beard, and blue or green eyes. He is frequently depicted wearing a cape over a vest, decorated with jewelry, alongside long pants and boots. Due to the complete paralysis of his right arm from overusing the Monado, he wields his sword exclusively with his left hand in combat.

Personality

Despite his legendary status, Dunban remains humble and approachable, speaking with a relaxed yet mature demeanor. Beneath his calm exterior lies a passionate, hot-blooded warrior whose determination bordering on stubbornness once earned him a reputation for reckless aggression in battle. He holds a deep affection for his younger sister, Fiora, and acts as a supportive guide to Shulk and Reyn, trusting Shulk's ability to wield the Monado without envy.

Abilities

Despite losing the use of his dominant right arm, Dunban excels as an agile physical combatant and an evasion-based tank. He maintains enemy focus through high damage output and agility rather than raw health, utilizing specialized aura abilities to gain, absorb, or clear hostility. He can single-handedly inflict both Break and Topple on targets, and possesses a unique trait that grants boosted agility when unarmored. His signature technique, Blossom Dance, delivers a devastating series of sword strikes upon maximum art charge.

Background

Dunban fought against the Mechonis army at the Battle of Sword Valley alongside Dickson and Mumkhar. By pushing the Monado past its limits to secure victory, he suffered severe nerve damage that left his right arm completely paralyzed. After a period of recuperation, he returned to action during an attack on Colony 6, joining Shulk's party to fight with a sword held only in his left hand.

Relationships

Dunban is the elder brother of Fiora, whom he cares for immensely, approving of Shulk as a worthy partner for her. He serves as a mentor to Shulk and Reyn, teaching Shulk combat techniques and guiding Reyn like a younger brother. He shares a battle-forged history with his former comrades Dickson and Mumkhar, and forms a lighthearted, respectful bond with Riki as fellow mature members of the travelling group.

Trivia

Dunban appears in the Super Smash Bros. series as part of Shulk's Final Smash and as a Mii Fighter costume. In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, a high-level unique monster named 'Dan the Sliced-Ice' evokes his legacy, and in Xenoblade Chronicles 3's expansion, an older Shulk adopts a single-handed sword fighting style inspired by Dunban after injuring his own right arm.
