Overview

Pneuma is a central character in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. She represents the awakened true form of the Aegis, originating from the Trinity Processor unit Pneuma created in the old world. As the ultimate Master Blade formed through the perfect fusion of Pyra and Mythra's hearts and bodies, she manifests when the protagonist Rex accepts both of them entirely, becoming her true Driver.

Appearance

Pneuma is characterized by very long, bright green hair styled in a high ponytail with swept bangs, complemented by green eyes. She wears a tiara and earrings, while her chest jewel is inscribed with the Greek characters for her name. Her attire is a white and black futuristic outfit featuring gloves, high heels, and mechanical wings. In battle, she carries a unique weapon known as the Aegis Sword.

Personality

Pneuma exhibits a personality that fuses Pyra's gentle, self-sacrificing warmheartedness with Mythra's straightforward and resolute inner strength. Having overcome her previous hesitation and desire for self-destruction, she maintains an unshakeable resolve to fight alongside Rex and her companions. Her manner of speaking blends Pyra's soft tone with Mythra's dignified air, and she accepts being addressed as either Pyra or Mythra with equal warmth.

Abilities

Holding the title of Master Blade, Pneuma sits at the absolute pinnacle of all Blades, possessing the reality-warping ability to manifest her Driver's mental concepts into physical form. Her power is drawn directly from the Gate. While inherently aligned with the Light element, her special techniques can adopt any attribute at will to seamlessly complete Blade Combos. She holds administrator-level authorization over automated devices like Siren and the computer systems of the World Tree. Her skillset dramatically boosts the capabilities of her Driver and team, though her awakening in battle is bound by a strict time limit and can be used only once per fight.

Background

Pneuma originated in the old world as one of the three units of the Trinity Processor, designed by the academic body Aoidos to manage the Gate. After the world was reshaped, the Architect Klaus appointed her as a Master Blade overseeing the cycle of life between Blades and Titans. During the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, she awakens at the Cliffs of Morytha when Rex embraces Pyra and Mythra's pain, creating an absolute bond between Driver and Blade. Following the final battle against Malos, she chooses to remain behind at the crumbling orbital station to destroy the World Tree, entrusting her Core Crystal to Rex before triggering the self-destruction of Artifice Aion. Pyra and Mythra subsequently return from the Core Crystal as two separate individuals.

Relationships

Rex is Pneuma's true Driver, having unlocked her Master Blade state by embracing Pyra and Mythra unconditionally. Pyra and Mythra serve as her individual personalities, whose total emotional harmony enables her manifestation. Malos (Logos) is a parallel processor unit who acts as her mortal adversary, while Ontos (Ousia) represents the third processor unit sent to another universe. Klaus, the Architect, is her creator who granted her the name Pneuma. Her historic Driver, Addam Origo, feared the sheer magnitude of her power five hundred years prior, leaving her unable to attain her complete awakening at that time.

Trivia

The name Pneuma derives from the Greek term referring to breath or spirit. In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, she is uniquely designed without Aux Core slots or an Affinity Chart. She makes an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Legend-class Spirit; to avoid spoiling major narrative twists, official broadcast videos masked her artwork behind heavy pixelation prior to release. Additionally, Pyra and Mythra feature an emerald green color palette in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate referencing Pneuma's aesthetics. In the expansion story Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed, her power is revealed to dwell inside the Ouroboros Knuckle used by the protagonist Matthew.
