Overview
Malos is the primary antagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna - The Golden Country. Serving as the second-in-command of the secret organization Torna, he is the sole individual in whom Jin confides. His true identity is Logos, one of the three cores of the Trinity Processor and a Master Blade known as the dark Aegis. Driven by deep misanthropy, he acts in the shadows with the ultimate goal of bringing about the destruction of the world.
Appearance
Malos has a muscular build and a sharp, menacing gaze. He features short black hair along with dark or purple eyes. At the center of his chest lies a distinctive purple Core Crystal, which later gains a glowing purple sheen encased within a gold frame upon regaining his full strength. He dresses in dark armor.
Personality
Malos is rough, blunt, and sadistic, openly enjoying destruction and violent acts. He shows no hesitation in committing brutal acts, such as attacking Rex on a whim to test him or torturing Pyra to extract memories. Having inherited the misanthropic malevolence of his original Driver, he sees the world and humanity as worthless and seeks their total destruction. However, he exhibits genuine camaraderie toward Jin and his comrades in Torna, acting as a source of strength and empathy for their shared grief.
Abilities
As a Master Blade, Malos can operate without a Driver and possesses the unique ability to command other Blades. Initially, he controls the Blade Sever and wields an awkwardly shaped sword using a reverse grip. After losing Sever, he switches to a dark greatsword resembling a Monado, casting signature Monado Arts such as Monado Buster, Monado Eater, and Monado Jail while projecting kanji characters. In battle, he is also capable of hijacking and piloting the planetary weapon Aion.
Background
Originally created as Logos, one of the three cores of the Trinity Processor aboard the orbital station Rhadamanthus, he was later repurposed as a Master Blade in Alrest. He was awakened by Amalthus, an acolyte who climbed the World Tree. Absorbing Amalthus's deep-seated hatred, Malos went rogue and triggered the Aegis War 500 years ago. Defeated by Mythra with his Core Crystal damaged, he lay low until he met the grieving Jin. Recognizing their shared existential pain, they formed the organization Torna to orchestrate the world's end.
Relationships
Amalthus is his original Driver whose inner darkness shaped Malos's nihilistic personality. Jin is his co-founder in Torna and the only person to whom he fully opens his heart. Pyra and Mythra (Pneuma) are fellow Aegises derived from the same Trinity Processor architecture, serving as his primary rivals. Throughout their conflicts, Malos frequently tests and acknowledges the growing resolve of Rex.
Trivia
While he does not have a personal unique battle theme, the major boss music track 'Incoming!' is first played during his initial battle and makes its final story appearance during his encounter. He also appears as a Legend-class Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, featuring exceptionally high attack power stats.
