Overview
Germany, personified under the human name Ludwig, is one of the central protagonists in Axis Powers Hetalia. Representing the nation of Germany, he serves as a leading pillar of the Axis powers. Formed through a turbulent history of conflict and knightly traditions in central Europe, he is portrayed as an intensely serious, orderly, and methodical young man. Functioning as the reliable leader figure among his allies, he constantly faces immense stress while managing his unpredictable companions, balancing his heavy duties with absolute dedication.
Appearance
He is a tall, muscular young man standing 180 cm tall. He features slicked-back blonde hair with sideburns, which falls into straight-cut bangs when unstyled. His eyes are small and blue, characteristic of the author's Germanic depictions. Even as an infant nation, he possessed a boyish physical form. His military uniform includes a grey-blue jacket (green in the anime) featuring black cuffs, white piping, and a collar-mounted Iron Cross, complemented by a sidecap, long trousers, knee-high boots, gloves, and an Iron Cross pendant.
Personality
Ludwig is exceptionally serious, disciplined, and devoted to rules and order. Whether working or resting, he approaches everything with meticulous dedication, though his absolute trust in manuals and electronic systems like GPS occasionally leads to comical blunders. He is a perpetual sufferer of stress and stomachaches caused by the erratic behavior of those around him. Although awkward and easily embarrassed around women, he is fundamentally gentle and caring. When drinking beer, however, his restraint breaks down, and he releases his pent-up frustration by getting heavily intoxicated. He is also a passionate neat freak who values cleanliness and recycling.
Abilities
He possesses immense physical strength, capable of restraining physically powerful relatives by force. He displays extraordinary efficiency and precision, completing any task assigned to him flawlessly. In addition to managing virtually all domestic administrative and household duties by himself, he exhibits remarkable skill in domestic activities, including baking cakes such as Kuchen and Black Forest gateau, dog walking, thorough cleaning, and financial management.
Background
His nation formed through a history of conflict and hardship in central Europe. Because a physical foundation for his state already existed upon his emergence, he manifested as a boy rather than a baby. During World War I, he met North Italy, establishing his very first friendship. Later, during World War II, he formed the Axis alliance alongside North Italy and Japan. Following historical division and reunification, he currently shares a household with his elder brother Prussia, taking on most domestic responsibilities. He inherited many of his traits and skills from older Germanic predecessor states.
Relationships
North Italy (Feliciano Vargas) is his first true friend, met during World War I, whom Ludwig constantly looks after despite being exasperated by his helplessness (once even mistaking a gift of red roses from him as a proposal). He lives with his older brother Prussia (Gilbert Beilschmidt), whom he addresses as brother in private and in public while managing their household. He maintains a cooperative relationship with Japan (Kiku Honda) as part of the Axis, and shares deep historical ties with other Germanic family members, including Austria (Roderich Edelstein).
Trivia
The human name Ludwig was provided by the creator in response to a fan query regarding human names, though he is referred to by his country name in the main comic. He owns three large dogs named Aster, Blackie, and Berlitz. His favorite plants are the oak and cornflower, the national flowers of Germany, and his favorite treat is Black Forest cake. In the story's lore, he uses storks to deliver mail. In the W Academy alternate setting, he is a member of the journalism club.
