Overview
Norway is a male personification representing the Scandinavian nation of the same name in the Hetalia series. As a member of the Nordic group, he is characterized by his quiet, reserved demeanor and an ethereal, mysterious presence. Though he exhibits little emotional reaction and speaks with a detached low tone, he maintains distinct and enduring bonds with his neighboring countries. Within the series, he plays a uniquely fairytale-like role, blending a distant aura with quirky domestic interactions among his fellow Northern European states.
Appearance
Norway is a slender young man with light blonde hair and large purple eyes. On the left side of his front hair, he wears an inverted cross-shaped hairclip, an accessory he has worn since childhood. A distinctive curl of hair representing a fjord sticks out near the left side of his nape, appearing to float in the air. His signature attire consists of a sailor suit accompanied by a hat featuring a ribbon, while historical depictions show him wearing a skirt during medieval times.
Personality
Norway possesses a calm, emotionless demeanor with a faint, otherworldly aura. He is somewhat shy and uncomfortable around strangers, speaking in a muted regional dialect. While generally quiet, he harbors a dry, subtle tendency to pick on Denmark without the latter noticing. In contrast, he shows intense sibling affection toward his younger brother Iceland, relentlessly insisting on being called "big brother." Beneath his stoic exterior, he has playful and surprising tastes, such as enjoying salty licorice candy and holding a fondness for inexpensive pink rabbit plushies.
Abilities
Norway possesses the natural ability to perceive and interact with magical entities, including fairies, spirits, and a green troll figure. He occasionally relies on fairies to deliver his letters. Additionally, the inverted cross hairclip worn in his hair serves a practical functional purpose, acting as a communication device similar to a mobile phone.
Background
Norway shares a long Scandinavian history closely intertwined with his neighboring nations. Historically, he spent extended periods in a union alongside Denmark. Following political pressure from major powers, he separated from Denmark and subsequently entered an alliance with Sweden. During times of conflict and maritime blockades, he endured harsh living conditions on Denmark's behalf. Later, during a severe national butter shortage in the winter of 2011, he experienced distress until receiving assistance from Denmark. Over time, it was officially confirmed that Iceland is his biological younger brother.
Relationships
Norway shares a close bond with his biological younger brother Iceland, whom he dotes on while incessantly trying to get him to say "big brother." He treats Denmark with blunt sarcasm and teasing, yet their centuries-old companionship remains firm. He maintains friendly ties with Sweden and Finland as part of the Nordic group. Outside of Northern Europe, he is particularly close with England (Arthur Kirkland); the two share the ability to see magical creatures, frequently exchanging emails and conversing about fairies.
Trivia
Author Hidekaz Himaruya suggested several human name candidates for Norway, including Lukas Bondevik, Bri Tomstad, Bjørn, Kjetil, Knut, and Sigurd. The distinctive floating hair curl on his head was designed to visually represent Norway's famous fjords. In early conceptual drafts, his first-person pronoun was listed as "Watashi" rather than "Ore." Combined with early artwork of him gazing at a plush rabbit, this initially led some fans to speculate whether the character was originally intended to be female.
