Overview
Seychelles is a female character in Axis Powers Hetalia who represents the Republic of Seychelles, a tropical island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. She serves as the central protagonist in the spin-off game Gakuen Hetalia Portable. Often referred to as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, she is characterized by her cheerful, friendly, and carefree demeanor as a southern island girl, bringing a lively tropical presence to the series.
Appearance
She features long black or dark brown hair bound into low twintails with red ribbons that symbolize the sun. She has brown eyes and dark skin, though early illustrations and her debut appearance in the television anime depicted her with fair skin. Her primary outfit is a light blue dress styled to evoke the ocean. In various artwork, she is also pictured carrying a large marlin or fish.
Personality
She possesses an easygoing and relaxed demeanor typical of a tropical resident, though she can occasionally be somewhat lazy. While she takes pleasure in guiding tourists and welcoming visitors, she is also a contented homebody who loves staying indoors. In canon, she communicates using polite language and respectful forms of address. She also exhibits a modest side, becoming noticeably self-conscious about short skirts or revealing attire.
Abilities
Her skills center around her island's maritime and tourism trade. She is adept at fishing, preparing homemade dried salted fish, and producing canned fish products. She speaks a hybrid Creole language that incorporates elements of French, English, and various other tongues. In addition to guiding tourists and singing, she has developed practical business acumen following her nation's rapid economic growth.
Background
Her homeland has a history recorded as early as 851 and served as a pirate hideout from the late sixteenth century into the eighteenth century. It came under French control in 1756, where she was introduced to literacy and culture during her early years. Following territorial disputes, control was transferred to the United Kingdom via the 1814 Treaty of Paris, leading to eventual independence in 1976. Despite dealing with high living costs and a zero percent food self-sufficiency rate, she lives comfortably with support from France and the United Kingdom. In Gakuen Hetalia, she enrolls in W Academy's Africa class at France's recommendation.
Relationships
She shares close, adoptive sibling-like relationships with Francis Bonnefoy and Arthur Kirkland due to their shared history. She holds deep gratitude toward Francis Bonnefoy, who discovered her in her youth and introduced her to language and culture. Her connection with Arthur Kirkland involves working under his supervision while also playfully targeting him with frequent prank phone calls. Additionally, Feliciano Vargas affectionately calls her by the nickname Se-chan.
Trivia
She harbors a slight complex regarding her nation's unique flag design and national emblem, which features a marlin and a sea turtle. Although she has existed as an island for a very long time, she received her official name relatively recently. In secondary fan works, she is sometimes portrayed as a tomboy who ends her sentences with an informal speech pattern, though this stems from fan interpretation rather than official canon.
