Overview

Vietnam is a female character in Axis Powers Hetalia who serves as the personification of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Within the series, she is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and stands out as the sole female representative among the group's introduced members.

Appearance

She is depicted as a woman with long black hair tied into a low ponytail at the back of her head, with no distinct hair parting in front. Her signature attire consists of a green Ao Dai. She carries a traditional conical hat known as a non la on her back and is frequently seen holding an oar-like paddle. Early conceptual sketches featured hair accessories and different eyebrow shapes before settling on her finalized outfit and appearance.

Personality

Vietnam is quiet, modest, and somewhat shy, yet she possesses strong willpower and exceptional endurance. She values pride, tradition, and personal dignity. Her speech pattern is somewhat direct and neutral, leaning slightly masculine. She finds it difficult to smile broadly and tends to hold stiff facial expressions, becoming flustered when forced into photos. Although she often acts as the sensible straight-man among her peers, she can be surprisingly oblivious herself. She prefers coffee sweetened with condensed milk over tea, and her demeanor turns wild when intoxicated.

Abilities

She demonstrates notable creativity and crafting skill, having constructed an accurate costume of the table tennis robot TOPIO that won first place in a costume contest. She is also capable of handling a heavy wooden paddle as part of her regular equipment.

Background

For a long period, she existed primarily in rough concept drawings created by the author Hidekaz Himaruya. She made her official debut in Volume 4 of the main manga series, establishing her permanent visual design. She later featured in various special events, including the 2011 Halloween special and Volume 6 of Hetalia World☆Stars.

Relationships

Taiwan once forced her into a photo studio, provoking a flustered scream from Vietnam. During a holiday event, she offered coaching to Thailand while trying not to laugh at his strangely designed shirt. Philippines pointed out her arrival delay during a meeting. She maintains regular interactions with the other Southeast Asian characters, including Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Trivia

Unlike many nation characters in the series, she has not been assigned an official human name by the author. Early character concept sketches included notes regarding prominent eyebrows, which caused fan speculation before her design was refined for publication. She won first prize in a Halloween costume contest by dressing up as the Vietnamese table tennis robot TOPIO.
