Overview
Heracles Karpusi represents the nation of Greece in the anime and manga series Hetalia by Hidekaz Himaruya. Depicted as a tall young man with a peaceful and philosophical demeanor, he embodies the rich history and relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle of his homeland. Floating through life at his own deliberate pace, he spends much of his time pondering deep thoughts, taking naps, and interacting with cats. Within the series, he frequently appears as a supporting character, bringing a distinctively slow-paced and quirky atmosphere to the cast.
Appearance
He is a tall young man with messy, dark brown hair, long sideburns, and blue-green eyes. Sprouting from near the crown of his head is a distinctive, spring-shaped curl of hair. He is sometimes depicted wearing a beret or carrying a large cross that symbolizes Mount Athos. In certain contexts, he is also shown wearing cat ears.
Personality
He possesses a loose, easygoing personality and an unhurried, free-spirited mindset. His speech pattern is noticeably slow and punctuated by long pauses, which remains unchanged even when he becomes upset. Although he often appears absentminded, his mind is constantly active with thoughts about philosophy, history, and cats—though a single sneeze can make him instantly forget whatever he was thinking. Despite his gentle and friendly nature, he displays a surprisingly bold and unrestrained side when it comes to romance, and his driving speed unexpectedly picks up whenever he gets behind the wheel of a car.
Abilities
While not characterized by supernatural powers, he has a notable habit of eating extremely quickly despite his otherwise sluggish behavior. When driving a vehicle, his reaction time and speed noticeably increase compared to his usual slow rhythm. Additionally, he possesses an extensive intellectual background in philosophy, mythology, and historical scholarship, allowing him to conduct archaeological excavations.
Background
Raised in the household of Turkey during his childhood, he inherits his heritage directly from his mother, Ancient Greece. As an adult, he considers the excavation of his mother's ancient archaeological sites to be his primary life's work. Because important ruins are constantly uncovered whenever he digs in his yard, he faces ongoing delays in constructing modern subways and high-rise architecture. In modern times, he also contends with financial troubles within the European Union and deals with neighboring Albania repeatedly entering his home without permission.
Relationships
He holds deep affection for his mother, Ancient Greece. His relationship with Turkey (Sadiq Adnan) is marked by bitter rivalry, resulting in endless bickering whenever they meet, although he will still shop on Turkey's side of the border when nearby. Conversely, he shares a warm friendship with Japan (Kiku Honda), bonding over their mutual affinity for cultural topics and love of cats. He also attempts to look out for Cyprus, though his attention is sometimes met with mild annoyance.
Trivia
In early concept designs, he was originally envisioned as a quiet literary youth, but the author revised him into a laid-back philosopher after interacting with actual Greek people. His intense fondness for cats was inspired by a real-life Greek acquaintance of the author who used a Hello Kitty pen. Furthermore, his character design incorporates the real-world distinction of his nation possessing the longest national anthem in the world.
