Overview

Iceland is a male character representing the Republic of Iceland in Hidekaz Himaruya's manga series Hetalia: Axis Powers and its animated adaptations. Positioned as the youngest member of the Nordic group alongside Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, he hails from a remote island nation. While he presents himself with a cool and mature exterior, he is constantly doted on as a younger brother figure by the rest of the Nordics.

Appearance

He appears as a young boy with silver hair featured with inner-curling strands and an M-shaped fringe, sometimes shown with spiky ends in later artwork. His eye color is depicted as blue in early illustrations and anime seasons, transitioning to purple or reddish-purple in later designs. He typically wears long-sleeved jackets, shirts, gloves, and a ribbon, and owns numerous traditional knitted sweaters. His official height is given as 168 cm, with a weight of 55 kg.

Personality

On the surface, he appears distant and composed, but inwardly he possesses a warm and hot-tempered side reminiscent of his home nation's volcanoes and geysers. He strongly resists being treated like a child and puts up a stubborn front to appear independent. Despite professing a desire to be left alone, he harbors a fear of isolation and gets anxious when left behind. He is self-conscious about his lack of physical musculature, reluctant to wear revealing attire, and can be surprisingly frank when dealing with characters outside the Nordic circle.

Abilities

He possesses the innate ability to perceive fairies and supernatural beings, a traits shared with Norway and England. However, he actively pretends not to notice them to avoid being teased by his brother or viewed as eccentric. Additionally, he naturally speaks a localized dialect that is almost incomprehensible to outsiders, though he intentionally suppresses it in favor of standard speech to facilitate everyday communication.

Background

Raised in a remote island environment far from mainland Europe, he grew up surrounded by natural hot springs and unique cultural traditions. During an economic crisis that severely affected his land, he famously became the subject of a mock internet auction where his listing attracted a massive bid, leading to international financial assistance. Having vaguely sensed a biological connection to Norway since childhood, their brotherly relation was later formally confirmed through genetic testing.

Relationships

He is the younger biological brother of Norway; while he addressed him affectionately in early childhood, he now stubbornly resists Norway's constant demands to call him big brother. He is doted on as the youngest member by Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, though he frequently expresses annoyance at their overprotective treatment. He is constantly accompanied by his pet puffin, named Puffin, who wears a bow tie and speaks with a surprisingly rough, mobster-like tone despite his cute appearance.

Trivia

Due to a storyline referencing an online auction where his nation was humorously bid on for 1.7 billion pounds, he is frequently associated with the number '1.7 Billion' among fans. He is often depicted sharing salty black licorice candy with his pet puffin. At his home, natural hot spring water flows directly from the water taps.
