Overview

Hong Kong is a character from the Hetalia series, serving as the personification of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Representing a region situated in the Far East, he is depicted as a young man with a casual, modern youth culture sensibility. Appearing across various adaptations including the anime Hetalia The World Twinkle and audio drama CDs, he stands out among the Asian nations for his distinct contemporary mannerisms and laid-back attitude.

Appearance

He has slightly long black or dark brown hair with bangs swept to the left, and a facial structure resembling China. His most prominent physical trait is his exceptionally thick eyebrows, which were acquired later in life. In his youth, his eyebrows were thin, and his long hair was tied in a ponytail. His attire ranges from traditional Chinese-style garments to modern casual streetwear, jackets, shirts, and trousers. He is sometimes depicted wearing accessories such as earrings or glasses, and is frequently seen holding a mobile phone or firecrackers.

Personality

Hong Kong embodies the relaxed demeanor of modern youth, speaking in a trendy, slang-heavy manner punctuated by casual English expressions. He is quick to pull out his mobile phone to photograph anything he finds interesting. Although he was an obedient and diligent worker in his earlier years, his personality shifted into his current nonchalant state over time. Despite his overly relaxed style, he adapts his tone depending on who he is speaking with.

Abilities

While he does not possess supernatural powers, he demonstrates complete familiarity with modern technology, routinely using mobile phones to capture photos. He is also skilled at handling firecrackers, which he has notably used during festive occasions to startle others.

Background

In his early childhood, he was raised by China and spent his days as a docile youth who enjoyed being carried on his shoulders. He was later taken in by England and spent a long period growing up under his household. After his initial debut in a drama CD, he officially appeared in the main webcomic during a Christmas event, establishing his clear role within the series.

Relationships

He refers to China, his original guardian, as 'Sensei' and treats him with a modest degree of respect alongside his casual speech. In contrast, he addresses England casually without titles, having once startled him severely by detonating firecrackers. He similarly addresses South Korea directly, and maintains close ties with neighboring characters such as Taiwan and Macau.

Trivia

He lacks an official human name in the canon, though author commentary suggested a combination of an English and Chinese name. Fans commonly refer to him by pet names like 'Kaoru-kun', and occasionally use proposed fan names such as 'Wang Jia Long'. His distinctive eyebrows are humorously attributed by the fan community to a physical curse inherited from England.
