Prussia

Overview

Prussia, also referred to by his human name Gilbert Beillschmidt, is a character in the manga and anime series Hetalia, created by Hidekaz Himaruya. Representing the historic state of Prussia, he is depicted as the older brother of Germany. Following the dissolution of his nation after historical events, he resides in Germany's home while maintaining a prominent presence within the cast.

Appearance

Prussia is portrayed as a young man with short silver-white hair parted to the right and sharp eyes depicted in various shades including red, deep pink, or light blue. His body bears numerous faint scars from past battles. He is frequently depicted wearing a green military outfit similar to Germany's, as well as historical attire such as black robes or white cloaks. He is left-handed and is often accompanied by a small yellow bird resting on his head or shoulder.

Personality

Prussia has a highly boastful, aggressive, and child-like demeanor, frequently proclaiming his own greatness. Despite his loud and reckless exterior, he possesses a surprisingly meticulous and disciplined nature, having faithfully maintained a vast collection of personal diaries since his youth. Though he puts on a confident front, his antics often leave him in misfortune or solitude. He also displays a soft spot for small, cute animals.

Abilities

Reflecting his nation's martial history, Prussia possesses strong physical and combat proficiency. Beyond warfare, he is musically talented, being skilled at playing both the flute and the electric guitar. He also demonstrates high learning aptitude, having once mastered web design and programming techniques such as CSS and CGI within a single day.

Background

Originating as part of a monastic knightly order, Prussia evolved through the Teutonic Order into a duchy and later a formidable kingdom. He achieved great military influence under the reign of Frederick II. Following the historical dissolution of the Prussian state after World War II and a period associated with East Germany, he stepped down from active state duties and moved in with his brother Germany.

Relationships

Prussia shares a close sibling bond with his younger brother, Germany (Ludwig), whom he lives with. He retains immense devotion toward his former ruler, Frederick II. His past is marked by a long-standing rivalry with Austria (Roderich) and a complex history with Hungary (Elizaveta). He frequently associates with France and Spain as part of a trio of troublemakers, whereas he harbors a strong aversion toward Russia.

Trivia

Early concept designs originally gave Prussia blonde hair and blue eyes, which were later changed to silver hair and red eyes to distinguish him visually from Germany. Additionally, the series author has noted visual and behavioral similarities between Prussia and Sweden, such as when wearing glasses, their shared fondness for dogs, and certain personality traits.
