Romania

Overview

Romania is a male character from Hetalia: Axis Powers who represents the Eastern European nation of Romania. Known for his cheerful, slightly eccentric personality combined with a pragmatic perspective, he frequently appears alongside other European nations. In the W Academy spin-off setting, he is a member of the school's Magic Club alongside England.

Appearance

He has light brownish-gold hair parted to the right with visibly darker tips, striking red eyes, and noticeable fangs. On the right side of his head, he wears a mini top hat accented with a two-colored ribbon. His standard outfit consists of a red military coat accompanied by black trousers, brown boots, and gloves. In specialized alternate designs, he is depicted wearing a trench coat, carrying a handbag, and displaying body tattoos.

Personality

Romania is friendly, playful, and quick to socialize, though he is often regarded as an eccentric. Despite his strong fascination with the occult and romantic longing for fairytale princesses, he maintains a surprisingly grounded and realistic outlook on life. He is quick to apologize sincerely when at fault and uses the informal first-person pronoun oira. When it comes to matters involving his younger brother, however, he easily loses his composure and becomes intensely emotional.

Abilities

As a member of the W Academy Magic Club, Romania is skilled in magic and witchcraft, holding extensive knowledge of spiritual folklore and occult lore. Although his homeland is famous for vampire legends, he does not actually possess vampire traits like blood-drinking and is uncomfortable dealing with real blood. Additionally, he is adept at baking traditional Romanian pastries such as Plăcintă after club activities.

Background

Making his visual debut in the fourth volume of the manga series, Romania represents an Eastern European nation famous for Transylvanian vampire folklore. Historically, he served under Vlad the Impaler, whom he considers to have been a good leader despite the gruesome nature of his rule. Based on the etymology of his nation's name, he proudly claims to be a legitimate descendant of Ancient Rome.

Relationships

He is deeply devoted to his younger brother Moldova, often crying over him and expressing a strong urge to protect him. He maintains a close friendship with Bulgaria, with whom he frequently drinks and goes sightseeing, despite past quarrels over territory. In contrast, he has an intensely hostile relationship with Hungary, leading to frequent bickering. He also collaborates with England in the Magic Club and seeks stronger business ties with Germany and Italy.

Trivia

The character's claim of Roman heritage stems from his country's official name, which translates to land of the Romans. His romantic nature is reflected in his fondness for traditional Romanian folklore figures, such as the fairytale princess Ileana. In online fan communities, he is commonly referred to by the nickname Roo-san to distinguish his character content from topics concerning the real-world country.
