Overview
Ukraine is a character in Axis Powers Hetalia who serves as the personification of the Eastern European nation. As the older sister of Russia and Belarus, she occupies a maternal yet frequently unfortunate position in the series, often finding herself dragged into the chaotic affairs of neighboring countries. Despite her diligent, hardworking, and caring nature, her tendency to suffer collateral misfortune has earned her widespread affection among the fanbase under nicknames such as Tobacchiriko.
Appearance
She has short light-blonde hair—depicted as gray in early artwork—and blue eyes. Her right-parted bangs are held by multiple hairpins, and she wears a white headband. A defining visual trait is her exceptionally large bust, which causes her clothing buttons to pop off when she turns around. As a child, she had long hair tied in a braid with a ribbon bow and wore heavily patched clothes.
Personality
She is a gentle and caring older sister who looked after her siblings, though she is notably a crybaby, clumsy, and a heavy eater. Despite her sweet demeanor, she harbors a hidden calculating side, as shown when she smilingly demanded succession rights to Kievan Rus in exchange for giving her freezing brother a scarf. Her intense, unshakeable affection for her brother as he used to be can unintentionally intimidate those around her.
Abilities
Reflecting her status as an agricultural country, she possesses practical farming skills and routinely carries a pitchfork designed for gathering hay and straw. In the W Academy alternate setting, she demonstrates vocal abilities as an active member of the school's choir club alongside the Baltic states.
Background
Having historically nurtured Russia and Belarus in an agricultural region blessed with rich soil, she gained independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union. She subsequently encountered financial hardship, repeatedly falling behind on natural gas payments to Russia, which led to supply shutoffs. In modern times, despite being forbidden by her superiors from seeing her brother directly, she continues to watch over him in secret while working to forge closer ties with the European Union and the United States.
Relationships
She adores her younger brother, Russia, whom she affectionately calls Russia-chan, though their connection is strained by political distance. She shares a close relationship and joint vocal performance with her younger sister, Belarus. Additionally, she maintains friendly interactions with Hungary, Estonia, and the Baltic nations through shared school activities like the choir club.
Trivia
Her official birthday of August 24 marks the historical date of her departure and independence from the Soviet Union. Due to her frequent involvement in unexpected troubles, she gained the popular fan nickname Tobacchiriko. In the anime adaptation, her pronounced bust movements are punctuated by distinct percussion sound effects played on timpani.
