Overview

King Delgal is a character from Dungeon Meshi. He was the Tallman monarch who ruled the underground Golden Kingdom of the Melini realm. At the beginning of the story, he briefly appears on the surface, declaring that whoever slays the Crazy Magician will be granted everything in his kingdom, before immediately crumbling into dust. His dying message serves as the catalyst for adventurers such as Laios Touden to explore the subterranean labyrinth.

Appearance

Delgal is a Tallman male standing 175 centimeters tall. He sports a facial beard suitable for royalty and attained immortality during his mature years.

Personality

Delgal felt a heavy obligation to protect his people, yet he harbored an intense dread of death for himself and his family after witnessing his father Flinag's poisoning at his own wedding. He carried deep remorse for inadvertently causing Thistle to turn to black magic. Nevertheless, he enjoyed watching swordsmanship competitions and possessed a tolerant side, such as excusing Laios Touden's attempt to steal food during his wedding in a living painting. He enjoys venison and dislikes celery soup.

Abilities

It is unclear how capable Delgal was as a monarch. Even prior to the kingdom's crisis, he frequently depended on court mage Thistle and sought his assistance.

Background

Born as the son of King Flinag, Delgal grew up alongside Thistle like a brother and later appointed him court mage. Around one thousand years ago, his kingdom faced severe crises including natural disasters, famine, military sieges, and the illness of his son Eodio. To resolve these, Thistle used a book containing the Winged Lion to create the labyrinth. A thousand years later, feeling accountable for Thistle's madness, Delgal possessed the soul-severed body of Eodio to escape to the surface, delivering his final message before his borrowed form shattered into dust.

Relationships

Delgal is the son of former King Flinag, the father of Eodio, and the grandfather of Yaad. He shared a brotherly bond with his court mage, Thistle, whose tragic burden he deeply regretted causing. Within the world of a living painting, he also interacted briefly with the adventurer Laios Touden.

Trivia

The opening scene where Delgal leaves his dying declaration before dissolving into dust became a widely recognized internet meme, frequently parodied across online communities. His birthday is December 5th.
