Overview

Thistle is a character from the manga and anime series Dungeon Meshi. Known by the titles "The Mad Sorcerer" and "The Lunatic Magician," he is an elf sorcerer who served the Golden Country and eventually became the Master of the Dungeon. Although over a thousand years old, he retains the physical appearance of a young boy. Driven by an intense desire to protect the royal family and the kingdom, he used forbidden magic to bind the citizens of the Golden Country into a state of distorted immortality inside the dungeon.

Appearance

Thistle is a dark-skinned elf with pointed ears, purple eyes set in a slight sanpaku and upturned gaze, and visible dark circles under his eyes. He has long pale-blonde or white hair styled with a braid, twisted sidelocks, and short bangs. Possessing a delicate, tiny frame and an androgynous, feminine facial structure, he easily passes for a young girl. His attire includes long juliet sleeves with puffy shoulders and tall boots. He is also noted for biting his fingers when anxious.

Personality

Despite being over a thousand years old, Thistle has a childish temperament and lacks general common sense. He felt deep gratitude toward King Delgal's father, who took him in as a child, and viewed Delgal as a brother. However, his desperate protecting nature twisted into severe paranoia and obsessive control after dabbling in dark ancient magic. He is hasty, quick to anger, and deeply stubborn, refusing to believe his loved ones are gone and clinging to his warped ideal of safety.

Abilities

Thistle is a master of ancient magic who channels his power using a flute and a grimoire containing the sealed power of the Winged Lion. He can summon, create, and command various monsters at will, convert monster blood into wyvern-like scouts, and extract or manipulate souls. He is also capable of transmuting bodies, such as fusing Falin with a dragon to create a chimera. His magical intensity scales with depth, reaching maximum power on the lowest levels of the dungeon while weakening severely near the surface.

Background

Taken in during his youth by the King of the Golden Country, Thistle served as a court jester and grew up alongside Prince Delgal. After the King was assassinated, the country fell into crisis. To save the realm and his cherished friend Delgal, Thistle ventured into the depths of the dungeon, struck a deal with the demon Winged Lion, and became the Dungeon Master. He moved the entire kingdom underground, granting the citizens a twisted, eternal life free from starvation and death. As the demon gradually devoured his desires, Thistle's protective instinct devolved into mad obsession.

Relationships

Thistle revered the former king, Delgal's father, like a father figure and shared a brotherly bond with Prince Delgal, though his love eventually turned into suffocating possession. He forged a contract with the Winged Lion to gain power, yet remained cautious enough to split and seal the demon's strength in two grimoires. Although he initially sought to eradicate Laios's party, he grew to respect Laios's deep understanding of monsters. Recognizing Marcille's half-elf lineage and her hidden anxieties, he ultimately passed the mantle of Dungeon Master to her.

Trivia

Thistle's residence on the 8th floor of the dungeon is notoriously messy, with journals and papers piled haphazardly everywhere. Despite the clutter, he insists he has his own precise system for where things belong, throwing a fit when his room is cleaned for him because he can no longer locate his belongings. Additionally, he has no preference for food, possessing neither a favorite nor a least favorite dish.
