Overview

Maizuru (real name Iyo) is a character in Dungeon Meshi. A Tall-man kunoichi and shikigami practitioner from the Eastern Archipelago, she serves the house of Nakamoto. Having long served the current head of the house, she acts as a retainer and former educator to his son Shuro, accompanying him on his dungeon exploration.

Appearance

Maizuru is a Tall-man woman with black hair and black eyes, clad in a kimono with sleeves shaped like crane wings. The black dots below her eyebrows are not moles but tattoos denoting her ninja rank. Though maintaining a youthful appearance assisted by cosmetics, her facial features changed slightly following her resurrection after being crushed by Falin. In her youth, she wore ninja attire similar to Hien and Benichidori, later wearing a sleeveless kimono paired with trousers.

Personality

Maizuru is overly protective and doting toward Shuro, frequently embarrassing him by recalling his childhood stories. She maintains a complex relationship with Shuro's father, acting as his concubine and subordinate; while she secretly complains about his irresponsible nature, she often relents under his influence. Despite being restricted by Shuro's mother from certain areas of the estate, Maizuru respects her inner strength. In contrast to her indulgent nature toward Shuro, she was a strict disciplinarian when educating Izutsumi.

Abilities

She is a skilled practitioner of magic who commands various yokai-themed shikigami, with a particular fondness for the Ushi-oni. Her magical repertoire includes healing, resurrection, and return spells. Despite her role as a caster, her physical ninja training grants her exceptional agility and jumping capability. She also devised a curse called Ninpou: Babysitter, which summons a knife-wielding Yama-uba to pursue any target that strays from her for too long.

Background

Having served the Nakamoto family head Toshitsugu Nakamoto for decades, Maizuru handled early education and specialized tasks for the family before stepping back from active espionage due to age. She accompanied Shuro when he departed for his trial journey to the island. During the dungeon expedition, she was crushed to death in an encounter with the dragon-merged Falin, though she was subsequently resurrected. Following the dungeon crisis, she returned with Shuro to Wa Island.

Relationships

She shares a confidante and lover relationship with Toshitsugu Nakamoto, Shuro's father. While she dotes heavily on Shuro, he created an emotional distance between them after learning of her relationship with his father. Izutsumi holds lingering fear toward her due to her harsh training methods. Additionally, she treats Rinsha with affectionate familiarity despite not sharing the same hometown.

Trivia

The name Maizuru is her ninja alias derived from the false lily of the valley plant (Maizurusou), while her real name is Iyo. Her favorite food is taro, and she dislikes foreign cuisine.
