Overview

Irumyuui is a character from the manga and anime series Made in Abyss by Akihito Tsukushi. Originally a young native girl living near the entrance of the Abyss, she was taken in as a guide by the Ganja suicide squad during their descent. Her tragic journey through the brutal environment of the Sixth Layer ultimately leads to her transformation via an artifact, culminating in her becoming the very foundation of the Narehate Village known as Ilblu.

Appearance

Irumyuui is a petite girl with dark skin, long white hair styled into twintails with hair between her eyes, and yellow eyes. Her design features cat-like animal ears with inner fluff and a tail. She wears a white shirt, a white jacket, and a dress. Her back bears numerous raw scars and tattoos indicating her infertility. As she mutates from the artifact's influence, her left hand turns into a melted metallic shape, a large hole opens in her chest, and her body develops fur-like folds before expanding into a massive, non-human structure.

Personality

Naturally timid and cautious around strangers, Irumyuui tends to utter a distinctive sound when startled. Once she warms up to someone, however, she exhibits an affectionate and playful nature, often hugging or teasing those she trusts. Beneath her initial reserve lies a deeply loving heart; even when faced with unimaginable suffering and the loss of her offspring, she retains a gentle and comforting demeanor toward the ones she holds dear.

Abilities

As a native of the Abyss, Irumyuui possessed local knowledge that guided the expedition team to the Sixth Layer. After integrating the Cradle of Greed, she acquired the capacity to continuously give birth to small, creature-like offspring. Her physical form eventually expanded into a living sanctuary that could absorb human beings, grant them altered forms, and sustain them within her own body, ultimately producing a single powerful, perfect child to fulfill her final wish.

Background

Born into a tribe that valued fertility above all, Irumyuui was branded and cast out after being declared infertile. She encountered the Ganja expedition team near the Abyss and joined them as their guide, forming a tight, parent-child bond with Vueko while learning their language. Upon reaching the Sixth Layer, she contracted the lethal parasite known as Pseudowater. To save her life, the team granted her the Cradle of Greed, an artifact that manifested her distorted wish to bear children. The fragile newborns died immediately and were used by the crew as a curative meal, causing her grief-stricken body to endlessly mutate until she expanded into the living city of Ilblu.

Relationships

Irumyuui shared a powerful pseudo-mother-daughter bond with Vueloelko, relying on her for emotional warmth and protection. Belaf taught her the squad's language and treated her kindly. Wazukyan utilized the Cradle of Greed on her and harvested her offspring, dictating the course of her transformation. Faputa is her final, trueborn child, brought into the world to carry out vengeance on behalf of her deceased siblings.

Trivia

During her time with the expedition squad, the only two individuals whose names she explicitly spoke were Vueloelko and Belaf. She also cherished a necklace made from the remains of a small native creature she had befriended during their journey.
