Maaa

Overview

Maaa is an inhabitant of Ilblu, the Village of the Hollows located in the Sixth Layer of the Abyss in Made in Abyss. Incapable of speaking any conventional language, the character can only utter the sound "maaa," which led the young delver Riko to bestow the name "Maaa-san." Resembling a strange Hollow, Maaa joins Riko's party after an eventful first encounter. Despite appearing to be a resident of the village like any former human, Maaa is actually a cell-like entity brought into being by the village itself.

Appearance

Maaa has a rounded body covered in pink fur, giving the upper half an appearance reminiscent of a plush toy or a ghost. The face features tiny beady eyes and a cat-like split mouth with a single visible tooth, often shown teary-eyed or drooling. In contrast to the cute upper body, Maaa possesses a right hand shaped like male genitalia and noticeably realistic buttocks. Official background details note a body odor resembling gently dried feces.

Personality

Maaa possesses a childlike innocence and a deep affection for plush toys. Although this naive nature can unintentionally lead to mishaps, Maaa is inherently kind and willing to step into danger to protect others. Despite being unable to communicate with words, the character is highly expressive and becomes warmly attached to companions.

Abilities

Maaa shows no specialized combat skills or powers. However, after losing parts of the body during the village's Balancing process, those lost portions eventually regenerated, albeit with a different color than before.

Background

Upon meeting Riko's group in Ilblu, Maaa innocently handled Meinya too roughly, causing injury. This triggered the village's brutal law, the Balancing of Value, which resulted in the confiscation of Maaa's cherished plushies and parts of the physical body. Despite this loss, Maaa later reappeared to save Riko and Meinya from danger, subsequently restoring the lost body parts and following Riko's party. It was later revealed that Maaa was not a transformed human delver, but an entity crafted directly by the village using accumulated value and signals.

Relationships

After receiving the name Maaa-san from Riko, Maaa saved Riko and Meinya from peril, becoming a loyal companion who follows their group. The relationship with Meinya began with an accidental injury, but transformed into a strong bond after the rescue. Faputa is noted as referring to the character simply as Maaa without honorifics.

Trivia

The character's official name includes the honorific, stylized formally as Maaa-san across media and merchandise. Following the anime adaptation, various goods were produced, including physical recreations of the character's stolen plushies and body pillow covers featured in online lotteries.
